Stretching is one of the most talked about and misunderstood topics in fitness and yoga. Is it necessary? What does it actually do? And what does the research say?

In this webinar, we'll explore the science behind stretching, including different types of stretching, flexibility training, performance, injury prevention, and the many claims that continue to circulate online.

Whether you're a yoga teacher, movement professional, or simply curious about the topic, you'll leave with a clearer understanding of what stretching can do, what it can't do, and how to make more informed decisions about your practice.

Join me for an evidence-based look at stretching. The Science of Stretching Webinar is on Tuesday July 28th from 11am–2pm Pacific. Replay available for 30 days.

Less drama. More data.

This was me in 1995 when I first started yoga. My lower back would start to ache after the first few minutes of savasana. My back eventually adapted and it hasn't been an issue since. As teachers, it's easy to forget these things and not realize what our students might be experiencing.

Such an underrated approach to this pose. It's actually quite an intense stretch through multiple layers of back muscles.

I usually twist and flex on the exhale, hold the position on the inhale, and repeat the flex and twist on the exhale for 3-5 breath cycles.

Another anatomy lab in the books.

Grateful for the learning, the conversations, the questions, and the people who make it so meaningful. I love you all.

See you in 2027.

This type of stretching is something I reserve for in-person events and mostly for yoga teachers who have already studied with me.

Not because it's a secret, but because it takes some background education to appreciate the nuance, communication, and hands-on practice required to do it well.

For me, this work represents the culmination of everything we explore when we move beyond the idea that stretching is simply about increasing range of motion.

When yoga teachers study stretching with me, they learn about:

• coordination
• usable range
• different types of muscle contractions
• force production at end ranges
• communicating through touch
• effective cueing
• anatomical landmarks
• observing a student's strategy rather than forcing an outcome
..and so much more.

These are just a few of the reason why I include this type of stretching in select courses of mine.

Not because I assume yoga teachers will go out and stretch their students, because once they understand it, they teach everything differently.

Study all the background theory with me online July 28th from 11am to 2pm Pacific time. Registration for the Science of Stretching webinar is now open. Replay available for 30 days.

We went from not feeling a stretch to it being such an intense stretch she couldn't hinge any further forward. I call that a success.

Also, we nailed it during the eccentric stretching and self stretch parts of the course. Tara will always know what to do for herself moving forward.

My 3-hour Science of Stretching webinar is coming up again in July. Join us! You know where to find the link.

This was such a profound moment for Anne. It's so rewarding as a teacher to support a student in experiencing something in a pose they didn't know was possible.

This whole clip was 3 minutes and every moment was valuable to the retelling of the story. I think I edited it down into a decent highlight reel, but it would have been better if you had been there.

Sometimes your students will rely on lumbar extension but think they are twisting. Here a few things you can look out for and some suggestions you can offer to help them discover thoracic rotation.

Sign up for my online 300hr YTT interest list. Registration will open soon.

Just living in and experiencing the physical the world gives you enough information to intuitively understand some basic biomechanical principles. You just need someone to ELI5 "explain it to me like I'm five."

From there, we can apply the concepts to all sorts of things we hear in yoga (like flat back preferences and rounded spine warnings or knee position fears) and think critically with nuance and context.

See you in a course soon, I hope. ✌️

300hr YTT for 2027 will be announced soon. Get on the interest list today!
