Great news but could use a little help
Despite the setback of another stay in the hospital to drain fluid from my chest, I have had some good news I’d like to share. For the first three months after bilateral lung transplant surgery, I have had to sequester (polite term) myself away from the public. My only interactions have been with my six caregivers who keep me sane. Since my last release from Loyola a couple weeks ago, I have been able to resume rehab work and I am now walking 5,000-6,000 steps five days a week with two days of lifting 3-pound weights.
Through all your thoughts, prayers and plenty of Reiki, I am now back to control much of the pain through heavy medication while healing a little each day. Although rehab will go on for 9 more months, I was able to venture out yesterday for a visit to the Hinsdale Public Library. I felt safe there because there are few people on hand in the summer. I had submitted a request to have my book “Vegas Hockey, Vegas Strong” that I co-authored with hockey guru Robert Lawson, submitted to the local author section. Behold, it arrived on the shelf just two days prior to my visit. Finding the book on the shelf brought me great joy and lifted my spirits immensely. The library purchased a copy from Amazon and there it was, catalogued and ready to check out.
This couldn’t have come at a better time as I have recently found out I need iron and magnesium transfusions, more X-rays and CAT scans and more medications. I still take 50 pills throughout the day each day as well as four injections of insulin. (Another gift when you get a lung transplant is diabetes). I also got word my insurance may be making cutbacks in January that could be devastating to me. Thanks to your continued contributions, I have weathered a storm of co-pays and expenses, but my ability to keep up has been exhausted. I thank God I have great insurance as the overall cost of a double lung transplant these days has exceeded $1 million and that total grows all the time. My sister, May Lee, has diligently run a Go Fund Me campaign to help defray my part of this and the extra costs involved.
At least for one day, I was able to feel immense pride and fulfillment that provided a necessary boost to fight on. Thank you for all your previous help to make my journey a success. My setbacks have been turned into challenges and my determination grew even more from seeing the book in the Hinsdale Library.
