It was Youth Night at Lakewood’s Garfield Soccer Stadium when the Rangers played a non-conference game against the Shaker Heights Red Raiders last night. Lakewood Soccer Association and Lakewood United FC came out in full force to support the home team. The connection between our high school programs and the Lakewood community was on full display.

The future Rangers witnessed Team 37 defeat the visiting Red Raiders 2-1 on another beautiful night for soccer.

All of the goals came in the first half. Sophomore co-Captain Teagan Sefchick (‘29) put the Rangers ahead 1-0 after thirteen minutes of play when she won an errant pass from Shaker’s goalkeeper. Sefchick stole the pass 30 yards from the goal. Her first touch pe*****ted to the top of the 18’ yard box and set up a left-footed shot that found the corner of the goal to give the Rangers the lead. It was Teagan’s 8th goal of the season, equaling her freshman season total. She has also assisted 4 goals this year.

The Red Raiders evened the score with just over 12 minutes remaining in the first half. As they have done several times this season, the Rangers responded quickly. Ainsley Tracey (‘30) won the ball inside Shaker’s half and passed to Sefchick. Sefchick switched the point of attack to Samantha Moran (‘29). Moran then combined with Penelope “Pip” Speck (‘28) who one-touched it back to Moran. Moran drove another left-footed shot from outside the box passed a diving Shaker goalkeeper and into the left corner of the goal to give the Rangers the lead. It was Moran’s 4th goal of the season and 3rd in the last two games. Speck now had a goal and an assist on the year.

While the youth in the stands enjoyed the action, the youth on the field matched Shaker and controlled the action in the second half. Kenna Callahan (‘30) continues to impress in the goal as she came off her line to win every ball that Shaker attempted to play through the Ranger defense. Elisa Nomina (‘30) stepped in again for injured co-Captain Carys Crone (‘27) and played an excellent game at center back. Maddy Klein (‘30), Brooklyn Hoover (‘30), and Tracey were strong in the center of the field.

Klein showed her versatility as she played well in the center mid-field, outside midfield, and forward throughout the game. Hoover shut down the opponent’s most dangerous player for the second match in a row. Tracey won many loose balls to initiate Ranger attacks during the game. And Norah McKay (‘30) worked hard and was dangerous at forward all night. Stella Sattler (‘29) was a presence in the Rangers attack and in the midfield during the game playing her most physical game of the season.

Anna Herb (‘27) continued her strong season in the backline and Chloe Carroll (‘29) had another brick-wall-like game as the two outside backs routinely stopped Shaker attacks and started Ranger counterattacks.

Team 37 improved its record to 3-5-1 with conference foe Valley Forge next on the schedule. The Rangers travel to Byers Field on Tuesday for a varsity-only conference game looking to improve on their 1-1-1 record in the Cleveland West Conference. Lakewood will be in the road for several matches before returning home for Senior Night on October 7. Join us to celebrate our six senior Rangers!

The Rangers hosted their neighboring rival, Rocky River Pirates, on Wednesday night by the tracks at Garfield Middle School soccer stadium. The rivalry dates back to 1990 when Team 1 defeated the Pirates 2-0. Lakewood won 4 of the first 6 meetings between 1990 and 2008. But since 2009, Rocky River has dominated the series winning 10 of 11 games. In the last 6 meetings from 2020-2025, Rocky River won all 6 times by a combined total score of 29-1. But not this game; not on this night.

This time, Team 37 battled the Pirates to a 2-2 tie in a back and forth game. The Rangers came from behind twice to earn the draw and take 1 point in the Cleveland West Conference standings. The Rangers are now 1-1-1 in the CWC with Valley Forge looming next week.

The pregame warm up took place in a steady rain, causing some fans to stay home, but the weather cleared up just before the 7:00 pm kickoff. It turned out to be a beautiful night for soccer in Lakewood. The game remained scoreless for about 21 minutes before the Pirates broke through to lead 1-0. The lead didn’t last long before Team 37 tied it. Goalkeeper Kenna Callahan (‘30) drove a long goal kick to Stella Sattler (‘29) who played a ball diagonally to a streaking Samantha Moran (‘29). Moran did the rest, dribbling from just inside the midfield line to the Rocky River end line. Moran cut the ball back to her left foot and struck a shot that soared into the far upper corner of the goal.

Co-captain Teagan Sefchick (‘29) controlled the middle of the field all night and almost helped the Rangers take the lead just three minutes later. Sefchick created the Rangers next goal scoring opportunity by playing a dangerous diagonal ball for Moran. Moran crossed it to Sattler who struck it well but at the River goalkeeper keeping the score 1-1. River would take the lead just with 2 minutes remaining in the first half.

The second half was back and forth for forty minutes. With 28 minutes left in the game, Sefchick received a long throw-in from Chloe Carroll (‘29) near midfield. Sefchick turned and beat her opponent before playing another killer diagonal penetrating pass to Moran who was streaking down the right half-space. Moran calmly cut the ball to her left foot again and hit another banger into the upper left corner from 20 yards away bringing the Rangers level again at 2-2.

The Rangers defense led by Senior Co-Captain Carys Crone (‘27), who has quickly returned to form following an early season injury, kept the Pirates off the scoreboard during the second half. Along with Crone, Senior Anna Herb (‘27) and Chloe Carroll played tough defense all night. Defensive center midfielders (all freshman) Brooklyn Hoover (‘30), Ainsley Tracey (‘30), and Maddy Klein (‘30) anchored the defensive midfield. Carroll impressively won multiple headers as the Rangers showed toughness and desire throughout the game. Callahan played strong in goal.

Junior Pip Speck (‘28) played well in multiple positions during the game while Elisa Nomina (‘30) joined Moran on the wings and Norah McKay (‘30) occupied the River defense throughout the match.

Team 37 hosts Shaker Heights on Saturday at Garfield stadium at 7:00 pm in a Varsity-only contest. We will celebrate our youth programs, LUFC and LSA, on Saturday during Youth Night. Come support this team that is working hard and dreaming big!

The Rangers stormed Normandy to win 3-0 in Cleveland West Conference action at Byers Field. Playing at almost full strength for the first time this season, a determined Lakewood won with a total team effort. The Rangers raised their historical record against Normandy to 17-7-3.

Norah McKay (‘30) created the Rangers’ first half goal by beating a defender and striking a hard, left-footed shot that was blocked by Normandy’s talented goalkeeper. Classmate Elisa Nomina (‘30) calmly chipped the rebound over the Normandy defenders and Goalkeeper to give Lakewood a lead that it would not relent. It was Nomina’s first career goal.

Meanwhile, Lakewood’s defense led by Senior captain Carys Crone (‘27), Anna Herb (‘27), Fallon Popovich (‘27), Riley Robertson (‘27), Josie Willis (‘28) and Brooklyn Hoover (‘30) kept Normandy off the scoreboard. Goalkeeper Kenna Callahan (‘30) came off her goal line brilliantly to s***f out any attacks that got passed the backline to preserve her first career Clean Sheet.

After Halftime, the Rangers clinched the win with strong midfield play from Pip Speck (‘28), Chloe Carroll (‘29), Nomina, Ainsley Tracey (‘30), Maddy Klein (‘30), Charlotte Berhow (‘30), and Gabby Markiewicz (‘28). The Rangers controlled the midfield with additional help from forwards Teagan Sefchick (‘29) and Sam Moran (‘29) who timely dropped into the midfield to help the Rangers keep possession and pe*****te Normandy’s defense.

In the second half, the Rangers were able to breakthrough two more times with goals by Sefchick and Moran. Teagan and Sam scored bangers from outside the box after the Rangers combined multiple passes to create the scoring opportunities. Sefchick now leads the Rangers with 6 goals and Moran has 2 goals on the young season.

The growth of this young team was evident. The Rangers return to action in a non-conference match at Holy Name on Saturday, September 12 at 5:00 pm.
