Picture this: You’re sitting on the couch at night, and you’ve done a fantastic job with what you’ve eaten and had to drink today. But as you’re watching TV or scrolling your phone, you walk to the kitchen in a trance-like state and start searching for something - anything - to eat. When you wake up the next morning, you’re feeling so motivated and energized about your fitness and wellness journey, and then you remember diving into the kids’ snacks late last night and you’re filled with shame and disgust. Sound familiar? You’re not alone.
Next time you catch yourself heading toward the kitchen when you’re not really hungry, take a quick inventory:
1. Am I hungry?
2. Am I thirsty?
3. Am I bored?
4. Am I tired?
Yep! Tired!! This is why this behavior tends to happen in the middle of the afternoon or at night, when our energy levels slump. When our energy levels are low, it’s harder to make good decisions and “stick with the program” - whatever that looks like for you. So, next time the desire to mindlessly eat happens, take inventory. If you’re tired and not actually hungry or thirsty, go to bed if it’s at night. If it’s during the day, take a power nap if you can, do a quick energizing mediation, or go for a brisk 5+ minute walk. Afterward, see how your energy levels are, and reevaluate. So often, it’s not physical hunger that drives our snacking.
What is your favorite way to boost your energy in the middle of the day?
