The Lakeside River Park Conservancy’s Willow Staking Project returns this September for its second year of restoring habitat along the San Diego River.

Last season, volunteers helped plant 3,475 native willows. This year, we’re working toward an ambitious goal of 6,500 native willow trees planted.

Volunteers are invited to join us for:

• Willow Harvesting Fridays | 8:00–11:30 AM

• Willow Planting Saturdays | 8:00–11:30 AM

No experience necessary. All tools and training provided.

Whether you’re passionate about conservation, looking to give back to the community, or simply want to spend a morning outdoors, we’d love to have you join us!

Not every day at the River Park is a big event day... sometimes restoration looks like quiet growth, habitat recovery, and ongoing care for the river ecosystem, Squirrels! 🌿

Every willow planted, every piece of trash removed, and every volunteer hour contributes to a healthier future for the San Diego River.

Thank you for continuing to support local conservation and restoration efforts with us. 💚

Did you know the Least Bell's Vireo, one of the endangered bird species documented at the River Park, depends on willow habitat to survive? 🌿🐦

These small songbirds build their nests low in dense riparian vegetation, especially among native willow species like arroyo willow, black willow, and red willow. They rely on thick understory plants for shelter, nesting, and foraging near rivers and streams.

That’s one reason our willow restoration work is so important. Every stake planted helps rebuild critical habitat not only for healthier waterways, but for sensitive wildlife species that call the river park home.

Native plants supporting Least Bell’s Vireo habitat include:
• Arroyo, red, black, and sandbar willows
• Mule fat
• California wild rose
• Western sycamore

Thank you to all of our volunteers helping restore this ecosystem one willow stake at a time. 💚

In the spirit of trail stewardship, we would like to announce the reinstatement of our Gatekeeper program, and to request your help.

Trail users may have noticed that we have started locking the gate again at the Channel Road trailhead when the sun goes down. We are taking this step in an effort to prevent overnight “camping” and illegal dumping in the trailhead parking lot.

Gatekeepers are special community volunteers who live nearby in Lakeside and are available to regularly open or close the gate on scheduled days. Right now, we have the closing of the gate pretty well covered, but we can use additional help opening the gate in the mornings by 6:00am in the spring and summer.

Does this sound like something you might like to do?

If you are an early hiker, an early riser, or if you pass the gate on your way to work in the morning, please reach out to [email protected] and put “gatekeeper” in the email subject line.

We are excited to hear from you!

Birds are more than just cute visitors, they’re essential to the health of our ecosystem 🐦🌿

From pollinating native plants, to controlling pests and spreading seeds, birds play a critical role in keeping our environment balanced and thriving.

Here at Lakeside’s River Park Conservancy, every restoration effort - whether planting native species or maintaining habitats, it all helps support the birds that call this place home.

Next time you’re out on the trails, take a moment to listen, watch, and appreciate the incredible diversity around you. Every chirp is a sign of a healthy habitat.

Want to help? You can support local bird populations by:

• Planting native plants
• Reducing pesticide use
• Keeping a respectful distance from nests
• Joining us for upcoming volunteer days

Together, we can protect the spaces birds - and our community - depend on 💚
