The South Buckinghamshire Light Railway

The South Buckinghamshire Light Railway A 45mm gauge, 16mm/ft scale, garden railway that was located in Northwest Florida. The period modelled is between the 1930s and 1950s.

It has now moved to the North Georgia Mountains and is being recreated inside. Supposedly based on a fictitious 3ft narrow gauge railway in South Buckinghamshire, England. The SBLR is a 3ft gauge railway running between Datchet, on the river Thames to Beaconsfield in the Chiltern Hills of South Buckinghamshire. It goes via Cippenham, Slough Trading Estate, East Burnham, Farnham Common, Hedgerley

and Gerrards Cross. The line in principally for goods traffic (farm produce, products of light industry) but there is also a healthy passenger (both locals and tourists) component. Interchange with the Southern Railway (Datchet), Great Western Railway (Slough Estate) and the GW/LNE joint line at Gerrards Cross provides for trans shipment of goods and passengers to other parts of the UK rail network.

It has been a while since the SBLR posted anything. That’s what happens when you move home. Since arriving in the Georgia mountains nearly two years ago now, I’ve been trying to find a suitable spot for recreating the SBLR. After much head scratching, I’ve decided to move inside. The plan is to have year round line in the basement. There are a number of ‘rooms’ available and the railway room has been claimed. Currently deciding on a track plan for what will be a terminus station (Farnham Common) with associated engine shed and yard, goods facilities etc. This will lead to a storage area/fiddle yard in an adjacent room. The track is being laid out on the floor to prove concept. Then the plan is to actually connect everything up to make sure it works. Eventually, staging will be built to raise the line up to save ageing back and knees! Then railway modeling will begin in earnest. Photos of the initial track laying in progress. Watch this space as they say.

18 months ago we decided to move from Northwest Florida to the North Georgia mountains. The first thing to be packed (a major task) was the railway. Even though the move wasn’t to happen until January this year, everything was boxed up.
We moved in January ‘23 and have spent the past 9 months getting the house straight and enjoying everything new. The garden area wasn’t really condusive to a railway so much work was done to create something. That finished this past week, so today a test track was roughly laid and the locos were roused from slumber to see if they could cope with the gradient on the area. Well, it appears they can! We can now start some planning for a much simplified end to end railway.

Before (bottom left), interim (top left) and today (all on the right).

After 14 years the South Buckinghamshire Light Railway (in its last incarnation anyway) is no more. Pending a move to the North Georgia mountains, the track has been lifted and stock put into storage. However the SBLR will live to run another day. Watch this space!
