Today I’m teaming up with Good Grefe BBQ and Dad Bod Barbeque to celebrate the long weekend by doing a whole hog. We decided Saints & Sinners BBQ Blue Label competition rub was the way to go. We don’t have a whole lot of experience with a cook this big but we’re up for the challenge!

With my transition to judging I’ve had more time on my hands so I’ve been getting into wood working. Our friends at Dad Bod Barbeque asked us to make them a cutting board and I really wanted to put my all into it. I’m really happy with the results and it was fun presenting it to Jake tonight! Next up, a few MN Wild cribbage boards. Stay tuned!

Magnum is stepping WAAAAY outside our comfort zone and competing in a SCA double today in Craig Grefe’s homeland of Merrill, WI. It turns out they actually have more than one stoplight! Beth Salzl is cooking her first SCA and the 🐐Dan Salzl hopes to continue his winning ways. We have a side bet that if anyone gets DAL the other three have to buy cocktails to mask the pain. It’s go time!

Tonight is one of our favorite events of the year, the annual Minnesota BBQ Society banquet. Every year is a blast, we get to see our “summer” friends… It sounds like there are some really nice donations in the silent auction and raffle, 🤞! The KCBS World invitational BBQ is off and running. Most of the MN backyard teams are going toe to toe with the pros today in the open event. As always, Connie Edwards is getting us all off to an awesome start with her famous breakfast, we of course have to wash the eggs, biscuits and gravy down with the bloody bar. Weez’s Groovin’ BBQ added some egg in a hole and sausage to the mix too. There are quite a few teams down here from Minnesota, good luck to everyone!

This weekend we cooked at one of our favorite events, Bring'n Home the Bacon, which was a double near Lacrosse, WI. Every contest there is always really well run with the best of the best teams as well as experienced, trained judges.

Day 1 had 40 teams competing, making it one of the largest backyard competitions there are. We took a disappointing 22nd in chicken but scored a 1st place rib call! That 1st place rib call gets us invited to the 2022 KCBS World invitational BBQ, which keeps our streak alive for being invited every year so far. We were thrilled to hear our name last. Everything we used to cook, from rubs, sauces and fuel we got from our favorite supply store, Anderson BBQ Supply, thank you for your support! A huge congratulations to Wrecking Crew Barbecue for a well earned GC!

Day 2 was another good one with an improved chicken call of 15th and a 7th in ribs. We'll take it! Furlongs Smoke & Seafood won GC and likely wrapped up the MN Team of the Year championship. Great season guys!

We made the decision before the year to focus our time and energy on KCBS sanctioned contests. Here are some interesting stats on our adventurous year:

States cooked in: 6
Miles driven: 4,294
Contests cooked: 11
Top ten chicken calls: 9
Top five chicken calls: 3
Top ten rib calls: 11 (every contest cooked)
Top five rib calls: 6
Best overall finish: RGC at Bringn Home the Bacon
New friends and memories made: Way too many to count

It's been a long, fun and sometimes frustrating year. We have no regrets and would do it all over again. We are pooped though, we'll take the winter break. Thanks for everything you did this year Gregg LeCuyer, (pops)!

We'll see a whole lot of you at the annual banquet!
