🇺🇸 Memorial Day 🇺🇸
“May we always remember that freedom was built on the ultimate sacrifice of those who gave their lives.”
Today, we honor and remember the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country.
Going into Memorial Day weekend, it was brought to our attention that the flag at the Wea fields was not flying. When we stopped to think about it, none of us could remember the last time it had been raised.
What happened next was a reminder of what this community is all about.
Without hesitation, people stepped up to make sure a flag would be flying again before Memorial Day. A huge thank you to Electric Plus for helping us access the pole, make repairs, and raise a new flag Friday morning.
What makes this even more meaningful is the story behind the flagpole itself.
Several years ago, the widow of Marine Sergeant Denny Jameson reached out asking why there wasn’t a flag flying at the fields. After Denny’s passing, their family requested donations in lieu of flowers to install a flag and pole at Wea in his honor.
Denny served in the Marines, returned home to Lafayette to play baseball on these fields, and later watched four generations of his family continue playing at Wea.
Even after storms damaged earlier poles, the Jameson family continued making sure one stood proudly at the fields.
As of Friday morning, we were able to let Mrs. Jameson know that the flag is once again flying.
Today, this story feels especially meaningful, a reminder that honoring those who served lives on through community, family, tradition, and remembering the people who helped shape the places we love.
Thank you to everyone who helped make this happen on such short notice.
