"High sticking" is an important skill for catching trout in the Smoky Mountains or anywhere you have rough pocket water. It's important for both dry fly fishing and nymphing, with or without a strike indicator.

It's important to keep casts short and keep all excess line off of the water, using the length of your fly rod and arm to reach over swift water. Keeping your arm high and the rod parallel to the water is key to success.

Do not lift your rod tip directly up. This actually drags your fly out of the pocket or slot and can even pull the fly out of the water.

Can you catch trout from a stream after it gets muddy after a storm? Of course you can! It might not be the fly fishing you had in mind but this can be great fishing during the summer.

Fish larger nymphs or streamers and put your dry flies away. Be sure your flies are heavy enough to get down in the increased flow and stick around next time a storm rolls through.
