AYS Families,
Many of you may have seen or heard about the incident that occurred near the ballpark Sunday evening. We want to address it directly so families have accurate information and so speculation does not create unnecessary concern.
Sunday evening, Alcoa Police responded after reports that an individual near the park had behaved erratically and caused concern for the safety of several juveniles and families in the area. The concern centered on the individual’s reported actions near the park and reports that he may have implied or suggested he had a weapon. Out of an abundance of caution, AYS initiated a shelter-in-place at the ballpark, and players, families, and staff were moved to secure areas until law enforcement responded and confirmed the area was safe.
At this time, there is no ongoing credible threat to our ballpark, league, players, or families. However, any report involving the safety of children and families is something we take seriously. Law enforcement responded quickly, located the individual, and took him into custody. He has also been formally trespassed from ballpark property.
We are fortunate to live in a safe city and to have a ballpark that remains a safe place for our players, families, and community. Situations like this are rare, but they remind us of the importance of awareness, calm decision-making, and working together to protect our kids.
Because this is a law enforcement matter, we will not speculate beyond what has been officially reported. Please know that AYS acted quickly, took the report seriously, and will continue working with local law enforcement to maintain a safe and welcoming environment at the park.
Thank you for your patience, trust, and continued support.
