This is a Green Man...a foliated head frequently found on masonary façades which contain traditional carved ornament.

This one, though, is special. I sought it out and purchased it upon learning of the passing of my friend and college design mentor, Asher Derman. It now watches over my design workstation and reminds me of his influence.

When I was in design school, I was an “older than average student”, having spent some time playing music (and installing DI-NOC™) prior to enrolling in the UT Architechture program. Asher realized that I’d been “out in the world” and he took me under his wing, pushed me and taught me to see EVERYTHING differently.

Sadly, the world lost his vision in 2006, but not before becoming one of the driving forces in the sustainable design movement and an instrumental figure in the founding of the US Green Building Counsel.

I’m going to be posting more about Asher and his groundbreaking work in sustainable design, but now you know a little bit more about why I’m passionate about adaptive reuse and using 3M™ DI-NOC™ Architectural Finishes to reenvision existing elements in the built environment.

“I don’t use fake wood, I only use REAL wood”.
These words were said to me during an architectural new materials workshop almost 15 years ago, while displaying our applied fusion finishes. The architect who said this is a personal friend and highly respected in our area.

After making that statement, I asked him if he had any real concern for sustainability. Almost offended, he quickly responded “of course...that’s why I specify renewable materials”.

I then pointed out that, by using our surface applied finishes, we are able to allow elements like cabinetry and doors to be refinished affordably, in place...removing the need for those items to be demolished and sent to the landfill.

Now, years later, he’s a committed user of our product. It took time and education, but the entire design industy still needs the ability to rapidly and sustainably re-purpose elements in the built environment.

Let me know if I can show you more about these amazing finishes.

Having an eye for design means that you always look for beauty, symmetry, flow and simple utilization of elements, color and mass. Last weekend I happened to see this elevation of a beautiful Victorian in Cocoa, Florida and it struck me as just an amazing collection of elements that date to the late 1800’s. Love seeing ageless use of line and shadow.

Headed home after a great week of dealer meetings and staff updates at Accent’s West offices. Strolling into Bush International, there is this awesome hanging piece that integrates cable, glass, dichroic and other elements into a visually stunning part of the space.
3Ms Dichroic Series enables creatives the freedom to execute projects that use light as a dynamic part of almost any design.

Head walls in hospital environments are fantastic recipients of Architectural Finish Films. They apply quickly and professionally, they’re durable, look amazing and can be cleaned even with harsh anti-microbial cleaners. Have your Med Gas team refresh the controls and bezels, and you have an entire new headwall at low cost, quickly and cleanly.

When installing architectural finishes, the way that you deal with corners and intersections in the product is key to durability. These materials are sensitive to the methods used to create joints, and those choices directly relate to the situation where it is being installed and coordination with the designer and contractor.
There are actually 4 distinct types of approved joints for creating corners on surfaces like cabinet doors or drawer fronts. These 4 are the butt joint, the templated miter, the angled miter and the thermoformed corner. Each one has strengths and weaknesses related to how it is executed and final joint durability.
I’ll be posting a video soon that shows all four in depth and explains where and when to use each one. In the meantime, reach out if you have any technical questions about how to deploy Di-Noc or our beautiful line of Fasara glass finishes
