Which of the “Big four” sports are set up for the longest run of success at the University of Tennessee?

Football- Josh Heupel is entering his fourth season as Head Coach. He has 27-12 record in his first three seasons. Tennessee hasn’t had this type of success in 20 years. During this time span Heupel’s teams have set multiple offensive records. He resurrected two unimpressive quarterback transfers (Hendon Ho**er & Joe Milton III). Both quarterbacks left Tennessee after having their best collegiate season to go on and get drafted. Before coming to the University of Tennessee, Josh Heupel was the head coach at the University of Central Florida. Heupel went 28-8 there with two top 25 finishes. At the University of Central Florida, he worked for athletic director Danny White. White was hired by the University of Tennessee shortly before hiring Josh Heupel to lead the football program.

Men’s Basketball- Rick Barnes has been at the University of Tennessee for nine seasons. In Barnes’ nine seasons Tennessee has been the top program in the Southeastern Conference. Barnes led the Volunteers to two sweet 16’s and an elite eight. He has had seven NBA Draft picks in his first eight seasons with a projected draft pick next month in Dalton Knecht. Knecht was also a consensus first-team All American under Rick Barnes tutelage. Rick Barnes coaches a style of defense that opposing teams fear and try to imitate. His reputation for defense and development has helped him land coveted recruits like Dalton Knecht. Before Tennessee Barnes coached at Texas, Clemson, Providence, and George Mason. At Texas, he coached Kevin Durant and also made it to the Final Four.

Baseball- Tony Vitello’s first season at the University of Tennessee was in 2018. Since then the Volunteers have had their strongest baseball program in history. For the first time in history, they achieved a number one ranking in the polls. Vitello led the Volunteers to two College World Series. Vitello was named national coach of the year in 2022. In the current 2024 season the Volunteers were just given the number one overall seed in the post season tournament. Before coming to the University of Tennessee, Vitello had not been a head coach but was highly regarded and was a key factor in the success of the Arkansas Razorbacks where he was an assistant coach.

Women’s Basketball- Kim Caldwell was hired on April 7, 2024 as University of Tennessee women’s basketball coach. Although she has yet to coach a game at Tennessee, the excitement in the program has been at its highest level in some time. Caldwell’s head coaching record of 217-31 is an accomplishment at any collegiate level. Since being hired she has added three players transferring from other schools. Caldwell has a business type mentality that will spill over into any players she coaches. Her resume’ and style is guaranteed to get the Lady Vol’s basketball team back in the right direction and eventually to the top where the great Pat Summitt once had it.

All these leaders will have their program competing for years to come. Which program is poised for the longest run of success? The coaches mentioned are all at different stages of their career. Who has the best resume? Who has their program currently in the best spot. The questions asked go beyond just the head coach. The leading questions are, who has best case for continued success and who will continue at their position the longest

The evidence shows that Vitello and Barnes have the most accomplishments to date. I did not choose either as my answer. Rick Barnes is nearing the end of his career. This means that the basketball programs success will depend on the next head coach. Tony Vitello is a young coach that will continue for many years. However, due to Vitello’s extreme level of success. This will likely land him a job coaching Major League Baseball.

I chose Josh Heupel as my answer. Heupel is also a young coach. The difference though is his dream is to coach college football, not professional football. He has a relationship with athletic director, Danny White, that pre-exists his current job. Heupel’s offense is considered one of the best in football. So much so that others try to mimic it. Lastly the college football playoffs are expanding to 12 teams. This means there will be more opportunity for winning a championship.

Our guy Alex Golesh got a huge win last night. Hope he keeps it and makes it harder for UF in recruiting

What is everyone’s thoughts? This is my opinion. Obviously my opinion doesn’t matter. Not on the committee

Bama week!! If Milton can throw for 200 I believe the running backs and Defense will have us in the game in 4th quarter.

Jeremy Pruitt scandal hearings are today in Cincinnati. I don’t anticipate much further punishment, thanks to the way Danny White has handled the situation. The athletic department appears to be in good hands under his leadership.

Every Vol fan growing up had a certain players jersey on their Christmas list. Mine was Travis Henry. What was yours ?

In the last decade or so that’s been quite punishing for us Vol fans I’ve learned not to overreact. I can no longer get excited over a good half or a good game. Because typically I am let down shortly thereafter. I bring this up because lots fans are talking about our “good” first half or Heupel’s good play calling etc. I will evaluate at end of season. However expectations are very low considering our unproven coach. I’m a die hard and am always rooting on our Vols. Also don’t want to be blind so that it hurts a little less when I see it coming

For the record, I love the 2009 black adidas jerseys that were worn under Kiffin. It’d be cool to see those but other than that. No alternates please.

Do the Vols get upset in 2020 by anyone? To me we should win every game by double digits as long as JG isn’t the QB.
