A big thank you to Nick Africano of Mirador for sharing his knowledge with us at today’s sherry event, and to everyone who came out to join us. We had a great afternoon learning about the history and traditions of sherry—and tasting some along the way.

The Guards had a wonderful weekend at the Doc Adams Base Ball Festival in Old Bethpage. Although this was only our second year attending, our friends with the Mutual Club once again put on a first-class event. We always enjoy renewing old friendships, making new ones, and celebrating the game’s early history. Thank you to everyone who joined us on Sunday for another glorious day of vintage base ball! Your support, enthusiasm, and cheers make every match special.

Now it’s time to hit the road. This weekend, the Kingston Guards are headed to Old Bethpage Village Restoration for the Doc Adams Tournament. We’ll be proud to represent the Hudson Valley and continue playing the game by the rules and spirit of 1864.

One of our own is taking the stage!

Join the Kingston Guards for a special afternoon with our teammate Nick Africano—restaurateur, owner of Mirador, and one of the country’s leading authorities on sherry.

Nick will lead a fascinating conversation exploring the history, production, and appreciation of one of the world’s most distinctive wines. Guests will enjoy sherry samples and refreshments in the beautiful setting of the historic Louw–Bogardus House.

A huge thank you to Tom Gilbert for joining us today and throwing out the ceremonial first pitch before our game. In this video, Tom demonstrates a Jim Creighton-style first pitch, giving us a glimpse of how baseball’s greatest early star may have delivered the ball.

We’re also incredibly grateful to Rough Draft Bar & Books for hosting today’s book event and helping bring baseball history to our community.

If you haven’t already, pick up Tom’s outstanding new book, Death in the Strike Zone, wherever books are sold. It’s an excellent read and a must-have for anyone who loves baseball history.

Last week, the Kingston Guards were proud to participate in Celebrating Santa, People’s Place’s annual fundraiser supporting Project Santa.

Last weekend the Kingston Guards brought home a winner’s coin, shared plenty of laughs, and once again enjoyed a fantastic weekend in Gettysburg with friends from across the vintage base ball community.

Now it’s time to come home.

Join us a week from today as the Guards return to the field for another afternoon of 1864 base ball. As always, admission is free, the history is real, and all are welcome.

Our annual pilgrimage to Gettysburg ended with a fitting reminder of why we make the trip. We were fortunate to have one of our own, Jon Palmer, guide us across Little Round Top and to the monuments honoring the Ulster County soldiers who fought on that hallowed ground. His knowledge of both the battlefield and our region’s history transformed a tour into a powerful connection with the people whose stories we work to preserve.

Just as importantly, thank you to the friends and family who joined us—and who continue to indulge our wonderfully odd passions. Whether you spent the weekend playing 1860s base ball, listening to debates about long-forgotten players, or following us from battlefield to cemetery, you helped make the experience special.

The Kingston Guards have always been about more than the game. We use baseball to explore history, honor those who came before us, and strengthen the friendships and community that make this club what it is. This trip was a perfect reflection of that mission.

Thank you, Jon, for sharing your time and expertise, and thank you to everyone who made the journey with us. We can’t wait to do it again.
