May is ending with one of the most unusual sky events visible without a telescope.

On the nights of May 30–31, skywatchers will witness a rare Blue Moon — the second full moon to occur within the same calendar month. The previous Blue Moon appeared in August 2023, and after this event, another won’t arrive until December 2028.

What makes this year even more special is the timing.

As the Blue Moon lights up the sky, the four brightest planets visible to the naked eye — Venus, Jupiter, Mars, and Saturn — will also be appearing across the evening and morning skies.

Before sunrise, Mars and Saturn will shine low above the eastern horizon. After sunset, Venus and Jupiter will become visible in the west while the brilliant full moon dominates the night sky overhead.

Despite the name, a Blue Moon does not actually appear blue. The phrase is simply used to describe the second full moon in a single month — a rare calendar event caused by the Moon’s 29.5-day lunar cycle.

Because of that cycle, fitting two full moons into one month only happens about once every two to three years.

Although the planets seem aligned from Earth’s perspective, they remain separated by enormous distances in space. Jupiter alone is currently hundreds of millions of miles away, yet for a short time, they appear together in the same sky — creating a memorable celestial display for observers around the world.
