As winter approaches in the Smokies, Kuwohi Road (formerly Clingmans Dome Road) is closed beginning Monday, Dec. 2, for the season. It reopens in April 2025.

Fortunately, you can enjoy the views from Kuwohi through the chilly months ahead! A new, year-long we**am, funded by Friends of the Smokies, was installed on November 14, atop Kuwohi: www.nps.gov/subjects/air/we**ams.htm?site=grcd

The new we**am view from Kuwohi looks across the eastern half of Great Smoky Mountains National Park. On a clear day from the camera location, it's possible to see the southeastern end of the Smokies, along with prominent peaks, including Mt. Sterling (23 miles away) and peaks beyond the park boundary, like Mt. Mitchell (71 miles away) and even Big Bald (86 miles away).

You might even be able to see into the new year!

Our recent blog post tells the story of an adventure for the ages. A yellow brick affectionately known as "Bricky" has completed a full thru-hike of the Appalachian Trail, capturing the hearts of the 2024 hiking class. What started as a humorous gesture by Abraham "Rifle" Reyes—a brick painted yellow and labeled “EMERGENCY HIKING BRICK”—soon took on a life of its own. Over sixty hikers helped carry Bricky across the Trail's 2,190+ miles, creating a legend out of this “emergency” brick along the way.

Bricky’s journey included massages, acupuncture, a visit to Times Square, and even a spot in the Hiker Parade at Trail Days. Read Bricky's saga here: https://appalachiantrail.org/official-blog/how-a-brick-named-bricky-thru-hiked-the-appalachian-trail/

The Río Grande del Norte National Monument is home to rugged open plains, native grasslands, abundant wildlife and wild rivers. Thanks to the Land and Water Conservation Fund, we recently expanded the monument by 3,700 acres, increasing recreational access and safeguarding this northern New Mexico landscape.

This expansion advances the “America the Beautiful” initiative, a locally led and voluntary, nation-wide effort to conserve, connect and restore 30% of lands and waters by 2030. Learn more: https://www.doi.gov/priorities/america-the-beautiful
