Neil Smith (born April 10, 1966) is a former American football defensive end in the National Football League. He played for the Kansas City Chiefs from 1988 to 1996, the Denver Broncos from 1997 to 1999, and the San Diego Chargers in 2000. Before his NFL career, he played for the University of Nebraska where he was All-American in 1987. He also co-owned an Arena Football team, the Kansas City Comm

and. From the colorfully taped bandage he wore over his nose on game days, to his trademark home run swing after a sack (a homage to Royals’ Hall of Famer George Brett), to the devastating pre-snap “flinch” move that frequently drew offensive linemen into nervous false starts (and ultimately was outlawed by the NFL), Neil Smith was a charismatic, galvanizing figure on the Chiefs’ resurgent defensive line of the ’90s. Drafted out of Nebraska with the second overall pick in the 1988 draft, he thrived alongside his close friend, linebacker Derrick Thomas, who arrived a year later. Smith earned All-Pro honors and led the NFL in sacks in 1993, and made six visits to the Pro Bowl during his career, which ended with the Denver Broncos earning him not 1 but 2 National Championship rings.
