I use to HATE goal setting.
And that includes New Year's Resolutions!
Hate is a strong word, and maybe that's slightly exaggerated, but I really REALLY didn't like setting goals.
The problem was that I NEVER REACHED MY GOALS.
No, seriously. I'm pretty sure there wasn't even one that I ever accomplished.
The only thing I seemed to be accomplishing with my goals was the art of feeling terrible about myself!
It's not fun.
You probably can't relate😉
That all changed a couple years back when I learned (thanks to Brooke Castillo) about something called Strategic Byproduct.
✨Strategic Byproduct blew my mind✨
Because when it comes down to it, goal setting isn't actually about accomplishing a goal. What?!🤯
To be fair, it definitely can be and probably is for a lot of people. Clearly we would all like to achieve our goals. We set them because we think they're valuable and important.
BUT what goal setting is really about (for me at least!!) is all the experiences, changes, and growth that occur on the way to the goal. Just by working on it. Just by planning for it. Just by feeling the excitement of it.
Yep, it's who you become and what you gain as a byproduct of striving for that goal.
The problem is the expectation that we have to achieve the goal, and that if we don't we've proven to ourselves yet again that we will always fall short.
This year I can't wait to set my goals. In fact, I'm planning a little Vision Boarding session that I might share some glimpses of:)
I CAN'T WAIT to set them, because I can't wait to see what Strategic Byproduct comes from them throughout this year.
Am I still going to set lofty goals?
Heck yeah.
Am I going to expect to reach them in full?
Absolutely not.
But I am expecting to be different (in incredible ways) at the end of 2024 because of them.
Soooo, if you are anti-goals like I was, stop focusing on the goal itself and start focusing on the Strategic Byproduct. I bet you'll surprise yourself by who you become.
