How to change unhealthy defense mechanisms

For the most part, defense mechanisms can be toxic to our social skills, as well as relationships with people.

For this reason, it is a good idea to target those defense mechanisms and change them.

Here are a couple of ways you can do that:

1. Mercy

Stop guilt-tripping yourself and realize that you are not always aware of how your mind and ego will react.

Reactions and defense mechanisms are automatic and as such, we only experience them, rather than do them.

2. Awareness

Each manifestation of a defense mechanism is a chance for you to notice the unhealthy behavior pattern.

Once you're aware of it, you have the opportunity to make a conscious decision, cut it halfway through, and change it for the better.

3. Accountability

Talking to friends and family can be one of the best ways to get an objective, third-person perspective on your behaviors and mechanisms.

This in turn will help you become more aware of them and make change easily inducable.

4. Coping strategies

Mindfulness and meditation are two very potent tools for shifting defense mechanisms. The premise is the same - Become aware of your mechanisms and limiting thoughts and take a conscious decision to change them.

What is YOUR defense mechanism?

All of us, at one point in our lives, have developed certain defense mechanisms.

Here are the 5 most common ones:

1. Denial

A common defense mechanism is a denial to accept reality or facts that contradict what you want/need.

2. Projection

This second common defense mechanism involves a projection/attribution of one's own unacceptable thoughts/emotions to another person.

3. Regression

The third defense mechanism, regression, involves a sudden change that makes you act as you did when you did not really have those problems.

4. Repression

This is without a doubt one of the most damaging defense mechanisms, as it leaves emotions and feelings unresolved.

Repression is characterized by an attempt to hide thoughts, memories, or certain beliefs.

5. Rationalization

With this last defense mechanism, we tend to use self-reassuring but incorrect explanations for one's own thoughts and feelings.
(i.e I only cheated on a couple of my test questions, I did most of the others on my own!)

The ability to attract people and charm them, can in fact help you make those people be devoted and interested in you and your ventures.

Here are 6 crucial steps to developing lion-like charisma:

1. Goals & influence

Who's that one person that inspires you to do what you do?

Recognize your idol and learn from them!

2. Don't talk too much

Know your abilities but don't talk about yourself too much.

Remember, actions speak louder than words.

3. Understand emotions

Emotional & social intelligence are the two fundaments you should master.

Learn to understand your own emotions and those of others.

4. Listen more

Many people don't listen enough and instead, try to instill their opinion on others.

Try and listen in order to understand others' thought patterns and emotions.

5. Dress up well
Not feeling good in your own skin?

Dress up well!

Good-looking clothes are the best way to improve self-confidence and other people's perception of you.

6. Improve your vocabulary

Enrichening your vocabulary and teaching other people new words and terms will, without a doubt make you look different in their eyes.

Stress management and completing tasks in a timely manner is crucial to sustainable personal development.

Here are the 6 factors that impact this:

1. Organization - Do you have a structured plan of action or is everything chaotic?

2. Prioritization - If it's chaotic, go through your task list and set a priority. One task at a time.

3. Goal-setting - What is the purpose behind your actions? Set a concrete goal and be as specific as possible.

4. Stress management - Are you overworking yourself? Take stress-management breaks to align your thoughts into more coherent patterns.

5. Planning - Do you just know what you have to do, but not when you're going to do it? Set a concrete plan of action for your daily tasks

6. Delegation- Are there any tasks you can entrust to someone else? If yes, do it to save time for yourself.

The goals on your way to personal development are objectives you set to improve your character and skills.

1. Direction and roadmap - Where are you headed and what's the best way to get there?

2. Better work ethics - Do you have sufficient work ethics to do what you're set to do? If not, improve it!

3. Focus and productivity - Are you able to focus on the task at hand and be optimally productive?

4. New networks - Do you have old networks of people who are counterproductive to your goals? If yes. limit your time with those and build new, more relevant networks.

5. Feeling of purpose - Is your goal driven by external motivating factors like money or do you actually feel like there is a purpose behind what you are doing?

6. Time management - Are you able to properly manage your time and effort, while setting a concrete list of priority?

Lack of motivation

The lack of external or internal motivation is one of the most common causes for us humans, to choose not to do something.

Nevertheless, there are ways around that. Here are our 6 best tips:

1. Set realistic goals

Whether we're talking about wealth, fitness or any other goal, you have to make sure to set a realistic goals, as unfulfilled, highly expected goals can lead to a loss of motivation.

2. Adjust your level of "good enough"

What is good enough for you, really?

Do you often happen to call something good enough only to realize it is not even 10% of what you can do? Or is your 'good enough' too much and robbing you of energy that then leads to a loss of motivation?

Analyze and change!

3. Positive self-talk

Try not to look for external motivation factors and instead, focus on you and your achievements.

This is sustainable motivation!

4. Milestones

Whatever the goal is that you are trying to reach, write a to-do list or a plan with milestones.

Find an accountability buddy and make sure to stay on track!

5. Ask for help

Don't be shy or scared to ask people for help, as this is why we're humans!

6. Setup a reward system

Whenever you hit a milestone, make sure to reward yourself, but then again, do not do it just for the rewards!

Let go of anger

Anger can be one of the most addicting emotions while at the same time, being a soul-destroyer.

Here's how you can let go of it:

1. Admit your frustration
Admitting is the first step towards a successful release of the anger.

2. Write it down!
If you don't impulsively react to your anger response, you'll get the chance to analyze why you're actually angry. Write the reasons down on paper!

3. Shift perspective
During anger, we're focused on the thing that causes the anger.
Try and look at the bigger picture!

4. Find your triggers
When you know your triggers and what annoys you, you'll have the chance to counter the anger response at the moment of occurrence.

5. Exercise
Exercising is without a doubt one of the best ways to let the steam out.
Feeling like punching a wall? Why not keep your knuckles and have multiple punches on a boxing bag instead?

6. Breathe and meditate
Becoming aware of your emotions and reactions is one of the best ways to cast them away.

Keep your inner observer active and anger won't persist.

7. Talk
Once you're far from your reaction and have cooled down, talk to someone about your feelings.
