Sometimes dementia takes away the filter before it takes away the thought.

That can look like:

- blunt comments
- personal questions
- rude remarks
- language that feels totally out of character

What helps most?

- redirect
- change the subject
- don’t argue
- watch for patterns like fatigue or overstimulation

And if the behavior is suddenly new or much worse, don’t automatically assume it’s dementia. Pain, illness, or medication changes can cause sudden changes too.

At Golden Concierge, we help families understand what may be happening and figure out what to do next.

Sometimes the hardest part isn’t finding the right senior living community.

It’s getting the whole family on the same page while trying to make a decision that feels right for Mom.

This family came to Golden Concierge feeling stuck, overwhelmed, and unsure where to go next. Holly helped them sort through the options, find a community that could meet their mom’s care needs and budget, and bring some relief back into the process.

That’s exactly what we’re here for.

When the decisions start piling up, you don’t have to figure them all out alone.

The conversation is always easier before it becomes urgent.

Have you asked Mom or Dad what they want if the house gets harder to manage? What help they would actually be comfortable with? What “staying independent” looks like to them?

You do not need every answer today.

You just need to start talking.

At Golden Concierge, we help families figure out what comes next without rushing the person at the center of it.

“Maybe it’s just aging” is something families tell themselves for a long time.

But some changes deserve a closer look, especially when they start affecting everyday life.

Watch for things like:
• Trouble learning or holding onto new information
• Getting confused about time or familiar places
• Increasing difficulty finding words
• Changes in judgment or problem solving
• Pulling away from routines or activities they normally enjoy

These signs can happen with Alzheimer’s disease, but they can also overlap with other conditions. One symptom alone does not tell you the diagnosis.

At Golden Concierge, we encourage families to pay attention to patterns, not panic over one forgetful moment.

If something feels noticeably different, write it down and bring it up with their healthcare provider.

Sometimes the hardest part isn’t making the decision.

It’s figuring out which decision you’re even supposed to be making.

That’s exactly why we were so grateful to join Hello Iowa on WHO 13.

Liz Keller and Holly Perkins had the chance to talk about something we see every single day at Golden Concierge: families trying to sort through senior care, dementia resources, Medicaid, living options, finances, and about 47 opinions from everyone in the family group chat.

It’s a lot.

And you shouldn’t have to become an expert in senior care overnight just because Mom or Dad suddenly needs help.

Golden Concierge works with families across Iowa to help make sense of the options, advocate for the person they love, and figure out what actually makes sense for their situation.

If your family is sitting there thinking, “We know something needs to happen. We just don’t know what.”

Start with us.

We’ll help you figure out the next step.

Sometimes “I want to go home” is less about the address and more about wanting something familiar, safe, and comforting.

Instead of correcting the words, try responding to the feeling underneath them.

You might:
• offer reassurance
• shift into a familiar routine
• sit beside them and stay calm
• use simple phrases instead of long explanations

At Golden Concierge, we know these moments can be confusing for families. You do not have to have the perfect response. Sometimes helping someone feel safe is enough.

Save this for the next hard moment.

Sometimes the house is still standing just fine.

It is the stairs, the clutter, the laundry in the basement, or the bathroom that suddenly feels a lot less convenient.

A home can be full of memories and still need a few changes to keep working well for the person living there.

At Golden Concierge, we help families look at what is working, what is not, and what could make everyday life easier.

You can love them deeply and still miss the life you had before caregiving took over.

You can be grateful for the time together and completely exhausted by what it requires.

Both can be true.

At Golden Concierge, we know caregivers need support too.
