Management is a huge part of training. Piper stayed with us while she was in heat; Yogi, our Akita male, is not neutered. But we had zero issues. Lulu was still recovering from surgery, and we have had dogs with different behavioral issues staying with us, not for training, but because others find it difficult to take care of these dogs while their owners are away. Still, we have no issues. Why? We managed these dogs. We structured their lives to meet their needs and keep them safe. Yes. It takes more time, as the dogs are not free to run around. They are crated, on a leash; we go places and give them controlled freedom to satisfy their instincts and keep them safe. Our interactions are meaningful and purposeful. To let them be in situations where we canโ€™t control the outcomes or regain control of the dog would be letting the dog make wrong decisions. And it creates a clear picture for the dog: I can be myself here and rehearse bad behaviors without any consequences. Our goal is not to set the dog up to fail and be confrontational but to prevent issues and, if it happens, to have the means to safely de-escalate, regain control, and make it clear that this is not acceptable. Management is extremely important. It can prevent issues and help you live a fulfilling life with even a difficult dog. ๐Ÿ’ญ๐Ÿพ๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ‘ฃ

The walk. Many dogs exhibit pulling, lack of focus, sniffing everywhere, marking, and reacting to other dogs or environmental stimuli. Some owners permit certain behaviors, such as allowing a long loose leash to provide the dog with more freedom, stopping wherever the dog wants to sniff, avoiding peak hours or places for reactive dogs, or removing the leash and letting the dog run to expend energy. However, this approach fails to address the underlying issue. It is essential to recognize that walks are beneficial for both dogs and humans. Nevertheless, dogs walk at a faster pace than humans and have innate instincts to fulfill. A tight leash can cause frustration, and unutilized mental and physical energy can manifest as reactivity. The solution lies in balanced leash walks at a human pace, complemented by off-leash freedom to satisfy natural instincts, and incorporating multiple drills lasting one minute to mentally stimulate the dog, with a reliable off-leash dog that has a solid recall. Movement and play are highly effective in reducing stress, frustration, fostering strong bonds, and facilitating learning. Like all aspects of dog ownership, rules, boundaries, and accountability are necessary to prevent chaos and ensure the dog understands when to exhibit specific behaviors in various situations and environments. By adopting this approach, one can have a dog that plays enthusiastically and also knows when to relax, such as lying down and taking a nap while out shopping in a mall, because its needs are met and it fully comprehends how to behave. A trained dog is invariably easier to live with and take places, resulting in a fulfilling life for both the dog and its handler.๐Ÿ’ญ๐Ÿพ๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ‘ฃ

Numerous reactive canine companions and their handlers struggle with effective control and management. Many resort to allowing their dogs to expend energy through unrestrained play, hoping exhaustion will lead to improved manageability. Nevertheless, this approach proves ineffective. The underlying issue lies in encouraging over-arousal in dogs without providing them with the necessary tools for emotional self-regulation, thereby exacerbating environmental stress. Placing such dogs in unfamiliar situations inevitably leads to heightened stimulation, intensified behavioral issues, and increased difficulties in handling, culminating in stress and frustration for both parties involved. In such scenarios, attempts to restrain or correct the dog can exacerbate frustration and worsen symptoms, creating a highly stressful situation. A viable solution entails establishing clear communication, focus, impulse control, and teaching self-regulation, as well as learning how to engage in play that burns energy and challenges the mind, all while maintaining rules, boundaries, and accountability. Implementing each of these steps in a complementary manner is crucial, as omitting any one of them may undermine success. It is advisable to discontinue ineffective methods and adopt proven strategies. ๐Ÿ’ญ๐Ÿพ๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ‘ฃ

Our morning regimen includes workouts that offer liberty and mental engagement. Many trainers mistakenly prioritize physical activity, neglecting the mental aspect, which often results in an overactive dog. By incorporating mental exercises, the dog learns self-regulation. Adequate rest for both body and mind is crucial as it has a ripple effect on real-life situations.๐Ÿ’ญ๐Ÿพ๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ‘ฃ
