The Jesup Sandlot

The Jesup Sandlot Please join us for our annual Jesup Sandlot event!

What started as an open invitation to a 9-year-old’s birthday party at the ball field has grown into an inclusive, highly-anticipated night of baseball and community gathering under the lights ⚾️

We couldn’t be more excited to welcome back Tropical Sno! 🍧 This will be their third year joining us and providing that sweet sugar rush to fuel some entertaining base running 😁

Does it even get any better than small business supporting small town?! 😍 They even rearranged their vacation last year so they could make it to our event.

Show some love to our friends at Tropical Sno, and come see them tonight at the complex!

{whoops! Forgot to post last night 🙃}

‘Twas the night before Sandlot, when all through the town
All the kids were excited; they wouldn’t calm down!
PF Flyers were laced and bat bags were packed,
They couldn’t wait to see if their team will be “stacked”.

They’re watching the movie to see how to dress,
Tomorrow night is THEIR night and they want to impress.
The field is their stage; the whole town comes to watch,
Their love for the game gets kicked up a notch.

Some kids will be shy or have never played,
But once they join in, their day will be made.
For one night the game will not end with a winner,
And the most memorable moment will be from a beginner.

So join us tomorrow for a night at the park,
Grab dinner, watch games, and stay until dark.
Jesup is special with all the community endeavors,
If you come to the Sandlot, you’ll want to live here FOR-EV-ER.

Quick clarification about the event for our first timers 🙂

MOST everything at the event tomorrow is free.

What is NOT free:
▪️ Items from the concession stand (Money raised via the concessions goes to our Booster Club and is then redistributed to Jesup athletics & fine arts)

We will open the concession to sell only a few things:
1. Pop/gatorade/water ($2 each)
2. Candy ($2 each)
3. Popcorn ($1)

▪️ The dunk tank

We sell three balls for $5. Money raised from the dunk tank goes back into the Jesup Sandlot account to help fund future events!

Because the Jesup Sandlot event is community-centric — with BIG emphasis on “community” — we want to recognize some of our biggest supporters who have generously donated their time and resources to make this event so memorable year after year.

First up - the Buchanan County Pork Producers! I believe this will be the fifth year they have jumped at the opportunity to grill at our event. They’ve been such an integral part of the event from the very beginning, and we appreciate how active you are in giving back to your community in so many ways. Thank you for choosing us as a recipient of your generosity 💙

And this year, we’d also like to extend a massive thank you to Dan & Ali Thoma and Joe & Jennifer Thoma for donating all of the pork burgers that are provided at the event. If you attend the event, please be sure to thank the grill masters! And always support your local pork producers ☺️🐷

Alright, here’s my last rallying cry for the Jesup Sandlot sign-up for this year. Saturday, August 1st is game day!

https://forms.gle/GXYD9M4r7aEtabdg8

4 pm - Gates open
4-4:50 pm - Registration
5-6:30 pm - Preschool/PreK game (tball) & K-2nd games (coach pitch)
*Eat any time between 4-7:30 pm
7-9 pm - Grades 3-6 games (coach pitch)
9:10 pm - Fireworks to end the evening!

For anyone who has never attended before, here’s a quick FAQ about the event.

Q: What is the purpose of the Jesup Sandlot event?
A: For kids to enjoy baseball outside of the typical team restrictions. We mix kids of all abilities, different genders, and even from different towns for a night of non-competitive baseball that encourages kids to just be kids without the constant comparisons to one another.

Q: How much does the event cost?
A: It’s free! In the spirit of inclusivity, we don’t want any kids left out from enjoying the evening. We grill hot dogs and pork burgers, bring in a sno cone vendor, and line up a fireworks show – all of which are free to enjoy. Last year we filed the paperwork to make the Jesup Sandlot a 501(c)3. Generous donors help us fund the event so it truly feels like a community-owned passion project.

Q: What do we bring?
A: For any kids wanting to play, they just need to bring their baseball glove and bat (if they have one). And for kids who might be trying baseball for the first time at our event? Even better! We have extra gloves to loan out, and kids have been so kind in years past with sharing bats, batting helmets, and anything else someone may be missing. We always find a way to make it work! For those coming to watch, bring a chair if you aren’t a fan of bleacher butt 🙂

Q: Do I sign my child up as an individual or do we form our own team?
A: We envision this as a family event, so our hope is that a family signs up (using our form), so we can track how many people are coming in total (for food planning) and how many kids plan to play. Then we take it from there! Behind the scenes, prior to the event, we use the kids’ ages to divide them across the complex fields and between dugouts. We’ve learned that this makes everything run SO smoothly at the event because we can direct players and families to the right place.

Q: How will we know who to talk to or what to do when we get there?
A: The event always takes place at 531 Prospect St., Jesup IA. When you walk through the gates from the parking lot, we have tables set up and labeled for those who pre-registered through the Google form and those who are walk-ins and need a field assignment. We also have extra volunteers to help point you in the right direction and to show you where to find all the food and fun stuff!

Q: How long does the event last?
A: Gates open at 4 pm. The first set of games will start at 5 pm, and we like to do some quick thank-yous and the National Anthem before we get the games going. As a general rule of thumb, Preschool-2nd grade play from 5-6:30 pm, and 3rd-6th grade play from 7-9 pm. We encourage players and spectators to visit the grill and eat before or after their game. Around 9 pm we turn the complex lights off, and that’s the cue to the fireworks engineer to start the show!

Please complete this form if you plan to attend this year's Sandlot game, either as a player or spectator. The better we can plan, the more fun we will all have!
