In Loving Memory: Why We Play: Marquette Clark

​Today, we want to share the profound meaning behind one of our most cherished honors: the Marquette Clark MVP Award.

​To the general community, Marquette might have seemed reserved, a young man we first met in the Cleveland Arms Apartments in 2013. But to those of us who had the privilege of knowing him—especially those who watched him grow from a curious child at Metro Kids Konnection—he was a force of quiet strength and undeniable warmth.

​Marquette had an incredibly infectious smile. It was his superpower. You could be having the toughest day, carrying a heavy mood, and then you’d see Marquette. Without saying a single word, he would meet your gaze, flash that radiant smile, and somehow, your entire day would shift for the better. He had a way of bringing light into every space he occupied.

​He wasn't quiet, but he was reserved, saving his loudest laughs and most comfortable self for the people he loved most—his devoted mother and cherished family. We witnessed those "Sweet Moments" of deep connection, seeing him blossom from a boy into a remarkable 16-year-old young man, full of promise and heart.

​On May 20th, 2018, our community suffered an unimaginable loss. Marquette was tragically taken from us, leaving a void that words can barely describe. Today, a headstone rests at the edge of Ken Knight Village near the Washington Heights Apartments, a poignant reminder of a life cut short, right in the heart of the community he belonged to.

​But Marquette Clark's legacy is so much more than a memory or a marker.

​Here at the Duval United League, we established the Marquette Clark MVP Award to ensure his spirit continues to inspire. This award isn't just about athletic skill; it's about embodying the character Marquette lived every day. It honors the young athlete who shows growth, dedication, heart, and the ability to uplift those around them, just as Marquette did with his unforgettable smile.

​Every time this award is presented, we celebrate Marquette’s life, his light, and the enduring impact he had on everyone who knew him. He continues to teach us the true meaning of an MVP: someone who makes a lasting, positive difference in their community and in the lives of those they touch.
