Good job holding horse stance for the first time!
Learning proper foot placement and bending of the knee this week as this is an important basic of kung fu before being able to learn a form or kick a bag.

I enjoyed bringing The Mindful Dragon Martial Arts to a local summer kids’ program for the first of a series of kung fu seminars. The room aides and the kids from 4 yrs to 11yrs were very engaged and attentive! When working with pre-schoolers all the way through 6th graders at our school or off-site requires separation by age, appropriately timed classes, and parent/caregivers presence on the sidelines to observe and be there if their child requires a break. 💪

Bag work does not have to always mean going full power, full speed. It can be used to learn gauging, finding distance needed for a strike or kick, and how to know if you are using internal or external energy depending on the drill and style of the martial art technique you are applying in your bag work.

A student practicing techniques from the form he just started, called Fu Shen Yi, as applications on BOB. Practicing kung fu through open hand form, in Man Da, and full speed on BOB, helps students learn the mechanics of the moves, where to find the power, how to gauge, and when to use which block, strike, joint lock, or throw.

The purpose of Man Da (slow sparring) is for students to have the chance to practice when to get out of the way and when to use techniques they’ve learned as applications. This drill is great for beginners, such as the students seen here, and advanced practitioners. Two of tonight’s students experienced adding in kicking for the first time, which made the whole exercise feel brand new and even more challenging. 🙏

A few of our tai chi students were introduced to ‘Wave Hands Like Clouds’. Done as a qi-gong drill, it improves balance, relieves tension in the neck and shoulders, and calms the nervous system.🙏

Working stations in tonight’s class, with slow kicking drills on red bag to practice increasing chamber height, open-hand form, and medium speed applications on BOB.

Once a student learns a form, breaking its techniques down and turning them into applications on BOB is the next step.
