Measuring kick force- The Strike Meter, is one of the tools we use at Cashen Institute to help students gage their progress and improve speed and power. The Strike Meter is essentially an accelerometer which measures how quickly a student can move a well weighted heavy bag with their kick. Here, some of our red belts measure their progress after heavy bag workouts.

Who, other than bladesmiths even know what a clinker is? Master Cashen is on day two of teaching, as a Master Bladesmith, an Intro to Bladesmithing class, while I (Miss Hampton) taught class in the air conditioned armory tonight.😉

If you have never used a coal forge, can you spot the clinker? Seven new bladesmiths are learning how this week. With temperatures in the mid 90's for the Intro to Bladesmithing class in Troy Ohio, it is coal, rather than gas forges, to beat the heat.

Master Cashen has also been a firefighter for 34 years and is the assistant chief of the Hubbardston Fire Dept. He spent his day today as incident commander of a multi dept. house fire. The garage was lost but the house will be good, with some repairs. There was even a rescue of the family Sh*tzu by fire personnel. Master Cashen wishes to thank Pewamo Fire, Ronald Township fire. Dallas Township Fire, Maple Rapids fire, Lyons Muir fire, Carson City fire, Life EMS and Ionia County Victim's Advocates, for a job well done.

On Saturday August 8th, Cashen Institute was given the honor of being the location for black belt testing for all Michigan Tae Park Taekwondo Institutes. Filling the Armory with anxious students, the test included basic drills, form, sparring and board breaking.
With the heads of 24 institutes judging there were over 922 years of combined Taekwondo experience represented at the front of the room. Congratulations to all of our new black belts, an achievement that is the result of years of hard work and dedication.

With the Gym upstairs, and air-conditioned workout rooms downstairs, Cashen Institute is blessed to call the Ionia Amory home. Each space could be a complete dojang unto itself. Matt Painter and Keegan Rice of Ionia Parks and Recreation are so great to work with!
