…VERY DANGEROUS HEAT INDEX THROUGH THE WEEKEND…

Very dangerous heat index values for much of the Georgia Cycling area today through Sunday with heat index values in the 100 to 105+. There is some relief, however. A cold front will move across the state Sunday and Monday. This will bring increasing chance of showers and thunderstorms this weekend, but it will also bring much cooler temperatures on Monday. High temperatures on Monday will be 5 to 10 degrees cooler than what we have seen over the past few days.

…DANGEROUS HEAT INDEX RETURNS THIS WEEK…

It seems like summer doesn’t want to let go. Temperatures will be rising into the mid 90s across much of the Georgia Cycling area this week. Humidities will also be increasing as a system moves across the northeast Gulf and spreads moisture across the state. This will bring higher heat index values to the state along with increasing chances of afternoon and evening thunderstorms, mainly toward the end of the week.

The atmosphere has stabilized just slightly for this afternoon and therefore I have lowered the chance of showers and thunderstorms to 30%, mainly after 3 PM. There should be plenty of sunshine this morning with skies becoming partly cloudy toward the noon hour.

General Discussion
Skies will be mostly cloudy early this morning, but we should see some sunshine by noon. Scattered showers and thunderstorms will develop this afternoon, mainly between 3 PM and 9 PM. Sunday does not look much different with scattered showers and thunderstorms developing, mainly in the afternoon, although I can’t rule out an isolated shower or thunderstorm in the late morning hours on Sunday.

Lowered the chance of thunderstorms Friday and Saturday.

General Discussion
The latest model runs are showing a little less instability on Friday and Saturday, therefore I have lowered the chance of thunderstorms a just slightly. The best timing for thunderstorms will be between 3 PM and 9 PM each day. The models are now hinting at instability returning to the area on Sunday. If this trend continues, I will need to increase the chance of thunderstorms. But for now I am keeping the chance at 30% for Sunday afternoon.

General Discussion
I’ve made only minor tweaks to the forecast based on the latest model guidance. Moisture returns today and will remain over the area through the weekend. A weak frontal boundary will stall across north and central Georgia and this will be the focus for thunderstorm development each afternoon. At this time, the highest chances of rain each day will be from 3 PM to 9 PM. This will likely impact pre-ride on Friday and Saturday afternoon and evening.

The general forecast remains the same, however I have made some adjustments to the details of the forecast based on the latest guidance. Models are increasing the moisture on Thursday through Saturday. This has resulted in higher chances of rain along with increasing rainfall amounts, especially Thursday. At this time, the highest chances of rain on Friday will be from 3 PM to 9 PM. This will likely impact pre-ride on Friday afternoon and evening.

General Discussion
No major changes to the general forecast. The instability around the stalled front will linger into Friday and for that reason I have increased the chance of thunderstorms on Friday. While the storms are not expected to be severe, any storm could produce strong gusty winds and brief heavy rain.

The north Georgia teams will see lower humidities early this week which will keep the heat index in check. However, central and south Georgia will continue to see heat index values in the 95 to 105 range. A cold front will move into the southeast U.S. and stall for the last half of this week. This will bring an increase in shower and thunderstorm activity beginning Wednesday. This will also bring higher humidities which will push the heat index back into the 95 to 100 degree range for much of the Georgia Cycling area.
