There have been quite a few questions about the Infield Fly Rule since it was implemented this season.

The Infield Fly Rule: Keeping it Fair for Runners! ⚾🥎

Ever wonder why the umpire yells “Infield Fly!” before the ball even lands? The rule is designed to protect base runners from an unfair double play.

How it works:

✅ When does it apply?
• Less than 2 outs (0 or 1 out)
• Runners on 1st and 2nd, or bases loaded

✅ What kind of hit?
• A high pop-up that an infielder can catch with ordinary effort
• Not a line drive or bunt

✅ What happens?
• The umpire calls “Infield Fly, the batter is out!” while the ball is still in the air
• The batter is automatically out whether the ball is caught or not

What should runners do?

⚾🥎 If the ball is CAUGHT:
• Runners must tag up before advancing, just like any other fly ball

⚾🥎 If the ball is DROPPED:
• Runners are not forced to run because the batter is already out and the force play is eliminated
• They may stay on their base or advance at their own risk

🤔 Why this rule exists:
• Without this rule, an infielder could intentionally let an easy pop-fly drop and quickly create an unfair double or triple play on runners who were forced to stay near their bases

The Infield Fly Rule helps keep the game fair and prevents the defense from taking advantage of runners in this situation.

Thank you to the Humphrey Public Elementary Student Council and all who contributed! Their Penny War raised $279.16, which they generously chose to donate to Humphrey Little League. With their donation, we were able to purchase eight helmets and two batting tees. Thank you so much!!!
