Today was our 2nd known deer in the 6+ years that we have tracked for that was found deceased by the hunter. These are hard to swallow. In this scenario this clients deer was shot approximately 55 hours prior to our team showing up and previously ran with a fellow tracker that had worked the ground before us the day prior, this client knew he had made a pretty decent shot on his deer that’s something a lot of trackers hear on this profession, I like to listen and understand every track detail possible, (one of the coolest cleints we have met) he practically begged me to get to him and moving our schedule to make this happen, at this point my girl akira ran 2 previous Brutal lines with one bumped deer and no deer on the other that had 2 injured deer in the same vicinity practically the same game trail. Tonight I received a phone call from the (known down buck) client- we found him! After requesting where the location this deer was found I had checked our gps and we were within 140 yards upwind of this deer. Moral of this long story trust the dog!!! I believe in year 7 with my senior girl with 46 recoveries and multiple proof of life after tracks after the fact that this was a bad call on me the handler. I believe I had pulled her off the track due to countless distractions (live deer) birds etc. being a tracker has got to be one of the toughest careers out there. With this being said I am greatly happy that the closure of this clients deer was met and he was able to at least close his chapter on that animal sadly we learn and grow from these misreads.

POL-Deer we tracked on Monday came back up alive as we suspected. Hope the hunter gets redemption on this deer. I’m pleased to read my K9 again. We tried our best and believed to bump this deer we tracked. Can’t win them all but safe to say this deer is moving.

Another happy archer. 11-6-25

Sharing from the king of tracking. As we approach November, please keep in mind of these wait times they are very important for good successful recovery not only for the dog but for the clients the later we get in November the stronger the deer become and their will to live is so much more.

It is of utmost importance to give your deer a sufficient amount of time before tracking after the shot, regardless of the broadhead or weapon used. These are the recommended wait times we use and that have proven to help us be the most successful at recovering deer in Iowa:

Gut: 36-48 hours
Hind quarter: 36-48 hours
Liver/ Gut: 24-36 hours
Liver: 24-36 hours
Lung/ Liver: 18-24 hours
Double lung: 12 hours (rarely requires use of tracking dog)
One lung: 24 hours (20% chance of recovery)
Low brisket: 16-24 hours
Front shoulder: 12-16 hours (less than 20% chance of recovery)
High back/ top of one lung: 16 hours (less than 5% chance of recovery)
Heart: 6-8 hours (rarely requires use of tracking dog)

Iowa trackers consistently recover deer every year, over 60+ hours after the deer has been shot and have recovered deer out to 103 hours after they were shot.
Contrary to popular belief rain and snow DO NOT EFFECT the dogs ability to track the deer, unless there is up 2+ inches of rain or 5 inches of snow between shot and start of track.

Another one thrown in the bed of a truck. This was a deer that was questionable. Hunter immediately backed out wasn’t quite sure where the deer went, and Akira took us right to it. Hundred yards it sure is fun watching these dogs use their sniffer.

Akira rose on board for the season. One happy hunter. Good job Kiki. This was a 1.8 mile recovery 10-16-25

Tomorrow marks opening day of youth deer season in Iowa. With that being said if you don’t think the shot was good back out and please reach out to our team and we can talk through it. No need to push the harvest further than it needs to go. When in doubt call OUR TEAM! We may not even need to make an appearance. The call can save fulfilling that tag. We have experience in blood, shot placement and the anatomy of the whitetail deer. Please take the time to think about your situation. If you don’t see the deer crash after shot call us! It’s free to talk through it! What are you out!?
