Who let the dogs out?!?! Cedar Valley Boxing Clubs' Dogs Only Invitational was a great show! Many boxers showed they had the dog in them! It was all bite and no bark!! Tyler's opponent, whom we beat at the last show in Des Moines and who agreed to a rematch for this show, came out with a vengeance! We knew it would be a tough match, but it just wasn't our night. Congratulations to EMU Azteca on your win 🥊 I always say it's only a loss if you didn't learn from it. We learned a great deal from this one. It also provided the fuel to our flame to push harder for the next fight this coming weekend. Thank you to those who came out and supported us! Your time and support mean more than you'll ever know!!

Thank you, to all the officials for volunteering your time to allow these kids to learn and grow. Your time is appreciated! 🥊

🥊John is matched for his first fight on June 6th as well as Tyler for the Los Primos Boxing Club show "Backyard BBQ Brawl" in Cedar Rapids. We would love to see you all again the following weekend cheering us on! I'll post a flyer for both events in the comments below.

From small sparring sessions to bigger ones, Tyler and John push each other every time. The old man, Coach Boyer, would tell me, 'You want to get your fighters in small, quiet sparring sessions so you can focus on things and break it down. Then, get them to bigger sessions with different styles of fighters to practice what you worked on.' He also believed the coaches should be the only ones talking during sparring, but would let it slide at times when good sparring was happening and every fighter in the gym was vocal: 'Throw that 2!' 'Nice body shot!' It helps your fighter focus on your voice during chaos. On a smaller scale, it mimics the crowd during a boxing show. As I learned from the old man, it's important to train our fighters to remain calm in chaos and only hear our voice when leather is flying. And whether our fighters know it or not, learning to remain calm in chaos transfers into their life outside the ropes. Thank you, Coach Sykes at Cedar Valley Boxing Club, my old thumping grounds, for always working with us! 🥊 We appreciate you and the team!

Tyler is preparing for May 30th and is excited about the possibility of fighting in his hometown.

John is preparing for his first match on June 6th in Cedar Rapids. We have yet to be matched, but have high hopes.

Ps- I am trying to be better about posting more! Bear with me 🥊😆

After trying to match Tyler for the past few months, we finally got a fight at Peñas Boxing Club's show, "The Midwest Throwdown Connection 14," held in Des Moines. He hadn't fought since the Silver Gloves in December. Tyler's opponent pushed him to dig deep and focus on the skills we've been working on. It was a very close match, and it wasn't Tyler's best performance, but he still managed to get the win. After the fight, I approached the opponent's coaches and mentioned it was really close, and if they'd like a rematch, there's a show in Waterloo on May 30th. I want the rematch because I know what Tyler is capable of, and as a coach, I believe it’s important to always fight an opponent twice if they make you dig deep. I believe it makes you a better fighter, not just skill-wise but mentally. As we get closer to May 30th, I'll let you all know if Tyler is matched. We’d love to see you there to cheer for our team and our local boxers too!

Shout to Peñas Boxing Club for hosting a great show and working hard to get us a match!

Thank you to all of the officials who continue to volunteer their time to help make these shows and kids' dreams/goals possible! 🥊

Take me back Tuesday. Coach Patterson, whom I called Uncle Patterson, had this new "High Tech" camera that he thoroughly enjoyed. It would capture moments both when you were ready and when you weren't (he loved those specifically and would laugh as he walked away when you yelled for him to delete it), or he would capture moments like this! This looks to be a 19-year-old me having one of my many serious pre- or post-weigh-in boxing talks with Coach Boyer, whom I called Lil Greg or my dad/old man; he would mentally prepare me and go over the many things we worked on in the gym. Miss those talks and the high-tech paparazzi! 🥊❤️

I wanted to say thank you to Wisconsin Golden Gloves for inviting us to their show and trying to get Tyler a show bout or two so he could experience a multi-day tournament. We jumped up a weight class to get matched and worked hard to prepare him. We arrived Thursday night and weighed in on Friday morning. There were two other boxers in his bracket, but one did not show, so that meant we would box on Saturday afternoon. We weighed in on Saturday morning and later learned that Tyler's opponent had withdrawn from the tournament for unknown reasons. We were all bummed, but unfortunately, these things happen in boxing. I want to say thank you to Greg Sykes and Vidal Rubio for working with Tyler. Thank you to Lindsey Boyer, who helped us make the trip, and thank you to everyone who wished us luck and were ready to watch via live stream. Your support helps the gym in so many ways, and I appreciate each and every one of you. We are looking forward to having a show bout for the Iowa Golden Gloves next weekend and will continue to work hard. It was great to see old teammates at the tournament as well as familiar faces, and it was great meeting others. I didn't take any pictures, but my old teammate from Wisconsin happened to capture this photo of Al Mitchell and me. He's a legendary coach who coached the 1996 Olympic Team and has coached well over 100 national champions and so much more. 🥊

Another pugilist proudly earned their jacket, patches, and academic star! John, earned his American flag patch by showing incredible consistency – he hasn't missed a single practice since he started! He also earned the small Boyer Roberts boxing patch by always asking questions about how he could improve and whether he was doing things correctly. Not only does John remain dedicated to boxing, but he also excels academically, earning him a star. Plus, he manages a job on top of everything! He's truly building a strong foundation for his future by learning to balance school, his passions, and work. Keep up the fantastic work, John! 🥊🥊

I should have posted this a month ago, but it was just a matter of Tyler remembering to bring his jacket so we could attach his patch 😆 Tyler earned the Boyer-Roberts Boxing Academy patch for showing ambition and a desire to learn. He also received another academic star for keeping above a C average while preparing for upcoming fights on two consecutive weekends. Keep up the good work, Tyler!

One of our pugilists has demonstrated outstanding commitment in the gym and beyond. Today, Kayne earned his jacket, patches, academic stars, and the prestigious golden boxing glove. Kayne secured his American flag patch through consistent effort. He obtained his academic stars by maintaining a C average or higher throughout his freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior years. Kayne also earned the small Boyer-Roberts Boxing patch by showing ambition and the desire to learn. Kayne earned the prestigious golden boxing glove by graduating from high school early. What a remarkable accomplishment! He is currently enrolled in an apprenticeship program to become an electrician. Let us congratulate Kayne on his dedication; he has earned this recognition! The team and I are proud of him! 🥊💯
