Standing 5’10 with a lean, rangy frame, Arguello tore through three weight divisions during the 1970s and 1980s, dismantling hall of famers with surgical precision and finishing power that silenced arenas.

Because of his long limbs, Arguello mastered the art of distance management. He sat down on his punches at the exact range where his leverage was maximized. His short left hook to the liver was a career shortening weapon, breaking down opponents looking for a dogfight.

In an era when boxing had only eight weight classes and single undisputed titles held immense gravity, capturing championships across multiple divisions was a legendary feat. Arguello conquered three. He went for a fourth but he was stopped by an explosive, relentless force of nature Aaron Pryor in their first clash. The bout however was clouded by the infamous controversy with Pryor’s trainer Panama Lewis.

Arguello retired earning his place in the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1992. He proved that a fighter could possess terrifying, fight ending power without ever sacrificing poise, technique, or honor. He remains boxing’s gold standard of the gentleman warrior.

In January 2026, Ortiz sued Golden Boy Promotions in federal court to void his promotional agreement. Ortiz argued his contract expired when Golden Boy’s output deal with DAZN ended in December 2025. Golden Boy countered by securing a temporary restraining order and a federal preliminary injunction in Nevada, legally blocking Ortiz from negotiating or signing for the Boots fight independently.

On July 17, 2026, Golden Boy and Vergil announced an official settlement ending all litigation. While his financial details remain confidential, the agreement extends Ortiz’s deal with Golden Boy for three additional fights, effectively re-aligning Oscar De La Hoya and Team Ortiz.

He was a promoter’s dream, an opponent’s worst nightmare, and quite possibly the greatest middleweight to never hold a world title belt.

Born in Augusta, Georgia, into a family of 14 children, Briscoe moved to Philadelphia as a teenager. Training at the iconic Police Athletic Club alongside a young Joe Frazier, Briscoe naturally adopted the Philly style. What made Briscoe’s story legendary wasn’t his power, it was his work ethic. Even while headlining major arenas in Paris, Monaco, and Buenos Aires, Briscoe maintained his full time job with the Philadelphia Department of Sanitation.

Briscoe’s 20 year career (1962-1982) was defined by his willingness to step into the ring with anyone, anywhere. Carlos Monzon twice, Rodrigo Valdes twice and the welcoming of a young hungry Marvelous Marvin Hagler highlight some of his greatest battles in the squared circle.

Bennie Briscoe passed away in 2010, but his spirit remains immortalized in the sport. Each year, the Philadelphia boxing scene presents the Briscoe Awards, honoring the city’s top fighters, fights and achievements. He may not have won a world title but his legacy will forever remain unquestioned.

Turning professional in 1971 at 14 years old, Cuevas learned his trade in the unforgiving arenas of Mexico. By the time he was 18, his record sat at an unassuming 19-5. To an outsider, he looked like a journeyman in the making. But those five early losses masked a terrifying reality: Cuevas was growing into his body, and his left hook was maturing into a lethal weapon.

At 18 years and 6 months old, Pipino Cuevas became the youngest WBA welterweight champion in history. What followed was a reign of absolute terror. Cuevas held the title for four years, defending it 11 times. Ten of those defenses ended by knockout, with most opponents failing to make it past the second round.

Every brutal reign has a natural end. For Cuevas, the end arrived on August 2, 1980, at the Joe Louis Arena in Detroit. Cuevas ran straight into a 21 year old Thomas “Hitman” Hearns. In a passing of the touch moment, Hearn caught Cuevas with a devastating right cross in the second round, ending Pipino’s 4 year reign.

Though Cuevas fought on for another nine years, eventually retiring in 1989, his peak era was defined by that golden 1976-1980 window. Inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2002, Pipino Cuevas remains a folklore legend among hardcore boxing purist. He was a champion who turned professional as a child, conquered the world as a teenager, and left a trail of broken jaws in his wake.

He proved it wasn’t a fluke by traveling to Japan, to grind out a tough majority decision victory over Kameda in May 2025.

However his momentum completely derailed in May 2026. Scheduled to defend his IBF against mandatory challenger Ra’eese Aleem, the fight collapsed at the scale when Aleem badly missed weight. The fight was completely scrapped.

Featherweight is arguably the most action packed division in boxing right now. Missing Leo’s relentless inside engine deprives fans of high octane phone booth fights.
