You Won’t Be Alone (2022)
You Won’t Be Alone (2022) is a haunting and poetic dark fantasy horror film that delves into identity, transformation, and the raw essence of humanity. Set in the isolated mountain villages of 19th-century Macedonia, the story weaves folklore and brutality together in a chilling narrative.
The film follows Nevena (Sara Klimoska), a mute girl raised in isolation after her mother strikes a deal with a grotesque witch named Maria (Anamaria Marinca), a "Wolf-Eateress." On her 16th birthday, Maria returns to claim Nevena, transforming her into a shapeshifting witch. Curious about life among humans, Nevena embarks on a journey of discovery, inhabiting the bodies of those she kills, from women and men to children. Through these stolen lives, she experiences love, pain, violence, and tenderness, gradually understanding what it means to be human, all while Maria watches with growing resentment.
Written and directed by Goran Stolevski in his feature debut, You Won’t Be Alone features Noomi Rapace, Alice Englert, Carloto Cotta, and Félix Maritaud, each portraying various forms of Nevena. With cinematography by Matthew Chuang and music by Mark Bradshaw, the film runs for 108 minutes and was produced as an international co-production between Australia, the UK, North Macedonia, and Serbia.
Premiering at the Sundance Film Festival on January 22, 2022, and released theatrically in the U.S. on April 1, 2022, the film garnered widespread critical acclaim for its lyrical storytelling, visceral imagery, and meditative tone. Although its pacing and abstract style may challenge mainstream audiences, it was selected as Australia's official entry for Best International Feature Film at the Academy Awards.
You Won’t Be Alone is a mesmerizing and deeply introspective horror tale that asks: if you could live life through the eyes of others, would you finally understand what it means to be human?
