HJB vs Nashville Jr. Predators

The Hershey Jr. Bears met the Nashville Jr. Preds to determine their tournament futures, win and you live to play another game, lose and you go home. The game stayed off tentative from both teams. The Bears started to ratchet up the pressure and went to the power play with 2:22 left in the 1st. The choppy power play lead to a great chance by the Preds, but goaltender Noah Kim was up to the task to keep the score knotted at zeros to end the 1st.

The Preds got an early power play at the start of the 2nd. The Bears would kill this off behind strong play by Kim. The Bears continued to carry the play and struck first when Jai Kataria smartly dumped the puck in and went to work. Gavin Schmelz picked up the puck behind after the battle and tucked in to put the Bears up by 1. The Preds went to the power play with 6:19 left but the Bears got the better of the chances. With 3:01 left the Preds went back on the power play and this time they would get onto even up the score at 1-1.

The final frame would start 1-1, but that wouldn’t last long as the Preds took advantage of an early turnover to take a 2-1 lead. The Bears continued to pour on the pressure, but could not get another one behind the Preds goalie. The Preds would add an empty netter to seal the 3-1 victory to advance in the tournament.

Thank you to all of our fans for following along as the team embarked on an amazing journey. We truly appreciate the support.

Thanks you

2-16 HJB vs Arizona Devils Recap

The Hershey Jr Bears were back at it quickly this morning for a game vs the Arizona Devils at the Arena Rejean-Lemelin. The Bears were looking to bounce back from a tough couple games and they did not disappoint. From the opening face off the Bears controlled much of the play and did not surrender much to the Devils in the first period. The Bears opened the scoring when defenseman Cory Griffin put a shot toward the net that deflected off a Devils player and behind their goaltender to give us a 1-0 lead.

The Bears continued to control play for much of the second period until they took a couple of penalties. Arizona was able to steal some of the momentum while on the power play, but the Bears goalies again proved to be our top penalty killers. The second period would end the same way it stayed with the Bears on top 1-0.

The Bears entered the 3rd period hungry to finish off the game and went to a power play 10 seconds into the final frame. A couple chances in front lead to the puck popping out to Gavin Schmelz who buried it to give the Bears a 2-0 lead. This was no time to sit back though, the Devils were coming. After some back and forth play the Bears continued to control a lot of the play through better puck movement and putting pucks on the net. Owen Gallagher tacked on an empty netter with 5 seconds left to seal the 3-0 victory.

Bears out shot the Devils, 41 to 6.

This was as a great bounce back after a couple off games as the Bears prepare for their second tournament game. The Bears will be back in action on Tuesday at 12:30 PM at Pallvillon Guy-Lafleur vs the Nashville Jr. Predators.

Today’s goal scorers: Cory Griffin, Gavin Schmelz, Owen Gallagher. Stick tap to Matt Naroditskiy for the helpers on the first two goals.

February 15th recap!

JB vs ABITIBI-TEMSCAMINGUE FORESTIERS

The day finally arrived as the Bears were set to face off against ABITIBI-TEMSCAMINGUE FORESTIERS in their first official action of the 66th edition of the Quebec Pee-Wee tournament. The players kept up their tradition of throwing Hershey's Chocolate Bars into the crowd to start warm-ups!

The first period was a true back and forth affair with both teams having great opportunities to get on the board first. For the Bears it was once again Cole Morotta in net stealing the show with a couple big saves to keep things even.

The second period started much like the first with the teams trading chances and with 9:46 remaining the Bears went on the power play. While they had a couple solid chances to take the lead the FORESTIERS were up to the task. The Bears continued to apply pressure, but after a flurry of chances the FORESTIERS took off on an offensive rush and were able to put one in and take a 1-0 lead. The FORESTIERS went to the power play with 2:34 remaining. The Bears would head to a short power play that unfortunately lead to a breakdown and the FORESTIERS taking a 2-0 on a short handed goal with 15.2 seconds left in the second.

The teams returned to the ice for the 3rd after an ice cut. The FORESTIERS came out flying to start the 3rd, and with sloppy play from the Bears, were able to take a 3-0 lead. The Bears continued to fight and at 9:04 of the 3rd finally solved the FORESTIERS goalie and cut the deficit to two with a goal from Gavin Schmelz and immediately went to the power play. Some miscommunication at their blue line lead to the FORESTIERS second shorty of the game and a commanding 4-1 lead and eventual victory.

The Bears will be back at it for an exhibition match vs Arizona Devils at the Arena Rejean Lemelin Monday at 9:15am.

Day 3 recap!

HJB vs Drummondville

The Hershey Jr. Bears hit the ice this afternoon for a battle vs a very formidable opponent in Drummondville. This was evident from the very start. Early penalties lead to back to back 5 on 3 power plays for Drummondville. Drummondville setup on the PP and were peppering the net, but the teams top penalty killer, goaltender Cole Marotta, was up to the task. Cole made several huge saves to help the team kill off all the penalties. Marotta made two more bang bang saves in the closing seconds of period one to keep the score knotted at zero.

The second period opened with Drummondville controlling the first few minutes. The Bears were able to survive the onslaught and went to the power play with 7:30 left where the Bears would strike first. Gavin Schmelz put home a rebound off a perfectly placed shot pass off pad by Lucas Murray. The back and forth play continued until Drummondville was able to tie it up with a power play goal of their own with 90 seconds left in the second period.

Drummondville took a 2-1 lead with another power play goal 4 minutes into the final frame and they would not look back. Drummondville was relentless throughout the game and did a fantastic job moving the puck and maintaining possession. The Bears made one last comeback attempt when they went to a power play with 5 minutes remaining; however, the suffocating play from Drummondville bled off the remaining seconds. The Bears would drop their first game of the trip, but spirits are high and the squad is pumped for the first tournament game.

There are no games on Saturday as the Bears will have one final tuneup practice before facing off vs. ABITIBI-TEMISCAMINGUE FORESTIERS at the Videotron in official tournament action. Puck drops Sunday at 6pm.

Day Two Recap!
HJB vs England

The Bears hit the ice for an afternoon tilt vs Team England at the Complexe Sportif Desjardins Wendake. It was a dominant start to the action as we took a 1-0 lead on a goal by Max Krofchok when he picked up a puck off the end boards and popped it in. The scrappy play continued in front of the England net when Jai Kataria knocked in a rebound to put the Bears up 2-0. This would not be the last we hear from Jai today.

The Bears continued to control play into the second period, not yielding their first shot until a couple minutes into the middle frame. Penalties tried to slow the Bears down, but Jai Kataria kept the momentum rolling with a great stick along the boards. He stole the puck and wired a shot upstairs to put us up 3-0. The PK continued to shine in this game.

A sloppy start to the third period gave England some life when they cut the score to 3-1; however, the Bears were able to overcome the choppy start to the final period and closed it out with four unanswered goals leading to a 7-1 victory. The team will look to keep it rolling tomorrow in a match vs. Drummondville at the Pavillon Guy-Lafleur. Puck drops at 4:15 pm.

Today’s goal scorers: Krofchok, Kataria (2), Gallagher, Donahue, McHale, Marchese

Day 1 Recap!
HJB vs Vegas Golden Knights

The Hershey Jr. Bears took to the ice at Complexe Sportif Desjardins Wendake for their first exhibition game in Quebec vs the Vegas Golden Knights. The team jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead on a fantastic rebound goal by Collins Marchese. The Golden Knights tied the game at 1 in the second before stellar penalty killing lead to the second of the day for Collins to put the team ahead by 1. A huge save late by Noah Kim was followed shortly by an empty net goal from Brayden Donahue to seal the victory.

The Bears controlled much of the play and often kept the Knights pinned in their defensive zone throughout the game. Timely saves from both goaltenders along with the PK stepping up and Collins Marchese burying two got the Hershey Jr Bears Quebec Quest off to strong start.

The team is back at it tomorrow (2/12) vs England at the Complexe Sportif Desjardins Wendake. The puck drops at 2:50 PM.
