🎉Congratulations to our students who earned promotions last night!!

🎉NEW Gray/White Belt - Isai!
Isai had been training hard the last several weeks to get ready for his competition, and he earned himself two silver medals in large gi and no gi divisions. He brings a great energy to the mats and always has a smile on his face! This kid works hard, comes to every class he can, and has been an amazing addition to the team. He's definitely ready for this next level, and we can't wait to see how he does at his next competition as a new gray/white belt. We love that he's up for the challenge as he's signed up in just a couple months!! Congrats, Isai!!

🎉Congrats to our kids who earned promotions last night!

**New Gray/White Belt - Peyton!!**
This tenacious girl has fought her way through competitions since she was 32 pounds competing in the 45 and under divisions, arguably competing "up a weight class" except that 35 and under doesn't exist! This past weekend, she finally made it to 45 pounds to compete BUT still had to move up to the 55 and under to have a division. After 10 matches, she came away with two silver medals in gi and no gi. She's been through the ups and downs of winning a lot of matches in a comp, and losing a lot of matches in a comp, but she always comes back to the mats the next day to work on her jiu jitsu and get ready for the next one! We're so proud of this girl and it was no question she has earned this promotion through hard work, sweat, and a few tears. Despite it all, this girl never quit or backed out of any challenge. We can't wait to see what you do as our newest homegrown grey/white belt!!

Alongside Peyton, her teammates are also pushing themselves in the gym which is evidenced by the following crew who earned stripes last night!

Austin, Claire, and Vera just missed a podium, but Austin was barely heavy enough for her weight class, Claire and Vera were first time competitors, and Vera even asked to move up a weight class to make sure she’d have matches when her division was empty. These kids stuck around, cheered on their teammates and had great attitudes!

Huge thank you to our Coach team at the competition: James, Jacob, Kodi and Steven, as well as Coaches Josh, Bethany, and Mitch for holding the fort down at home!!

🥋Jason Matherley Seminar & Promotions!

It was a great week last week for OAJJ! On Monday, Jason Matherley came up from Tennessee and led a half-guard seminar. Everyone learned not only passing half guard from the top, but also sweeps from the bottom.

To top it all off, it was a huge night of promotions for nearly 30 of our instructors and students!

🎉Congratulations to our May 2026 Mat Monsters!

Even with school coming to an end, summer starting, a holiday, and everything else that happens in May, these students showed consistency on the mats by showing up to at least 10 classes (kids) or 12 classes (adults) in just one month!

🎁June will be the last month to make Mat Monsters to get in for the first prize drawing before we start the next round 👀

🥊🥋The OAJJ Instructor Team is Expanding - Welcome Coach Jess and Coach Steven!

🥊Coach Jess joins our team as an assistant instructor for our Integrated Combat Systems program. She brings over 10+ years of martial arts experience, with amateur records of 2-0 in Muay Thai, 2-0 in boxing, and 2-2 in MMA. She has a pro record of 1-3-1, has fought for a WBA title, and holds two boxing championship belts. Jess earned her Brazilian Jiu Jitsu blue belt from Professor Jason Matherley and Professor Derek, and has competed 12 times in BJJ, including 5 gold medals with one coming from the Arnold Sports Festival in 2025.

🥋Coach Steven is a BJJ purple belt that comes to us from Atlanta, Georgia, where he most recently trained under Kenny Kim. He brings years of mat experience along with a technical, detail-oriented approach to his game. He will be sharing some of his favorite open-guard concepts, details, and strategies in a new class he will lead every Friday at 6pm!

We're excited to add these two to our team as our academy continues to grow, and we're grateful for the experience, knowledge, and energy they each bring to the mats.
