Teaching Philosophy:
Jim’s teaching philosophy encompasses a holistic approach that focuses on improving performance by addressing factors through a physical assessment and a skills assessment, as well as examining a player's mental approach and course management techniques. He identifies the source of an individual’s physical power and consistency based on each body type, and identifies physical limitations. He can then provide instruction on how to improve elements of strength and flexibility that allow the mechanics of the golf swing to be applied more easily. Jim’s goal is to motivate each student to get results on the course. Jim’s Involvement in Associations and Organizations for Golf:
Jim has been a founder of several special focus programs that expand the appeal and the reach of the game of golf to non-traditional segments of the general public. The CHADD (Children and Adults with Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder) Youth Golf Initiative:
Jim, who as a youth suffered with Attention Deficit, designed a program to provide children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) with the social, physical, cognitive and other skills inherent in the values of golf. Ladies Golf Program :
As Director of Instruction at Olney Golf Park, Jim has helped to establish a beginning Ladies Golf Program, under the direction of Jim Estes and LPGA/PGA Professional Lisa Abood. The program has grown to offer multiple Level 1 and Level 2 Beginner Golf Classes to ladies in a non-threatening environment. Salute Military Golf Association (SMGA) , Co-founder :
In 2005, Jim and Jamie Winslow were inspired to serve America’s returning wounded veterans by developing an unprecedented program that would bring the healing of golf into their lives. They co-founded the Salute Military Golf Association, a non-profit, charitable organization that encourages injured veterans to use golf as a means to overcome the limitations caused by the visible and invisible wounds of war. SMGA supports this effort by providing golf equipment, golf training, and golfing opportunities at local courses and national tournaments. In 2007, Jim and the SMGA were provided support for specialized training of PGA Professionals, as well as funding for teaching and for acquiring golf equipment for wounded veterans. Over the past two years, Jim has led a cadre of PGA Professionals in conducting free individual lessons for veterans in eight-session clinics conducted on Saturdays in the Spring and Fall. Areas of the 13-acre Olney Golf Park were made available for use by the men and women who make the 30-minute trip from Walter Reed National Military Medical Center and Fort Belvoir Community Hospital. The PGA Professionals who have participated in this program have witnessed the full spectrum of injuries, from the catastrophic, visible, physical injuries to the invisible wounds and suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder or Traumatic Brain Injury. The program currently involves over 40 wounded warriors.
