We set out this weekend to tackle the NORES 6 hour race during their 24hr sxs race. Sometimes racing just doesn’t go the way you’d like. We had a solid plan starting the day off with in the passenger seat and decided and would get in to give us a break somewhere in the middle of the day.
As we were getting ready and I had thought we were taking off 30 min after the sxs did and little did we know but everyone took off together. So right off the bat we were about 10 min behind. Mark n I set off on a good pace not pushing eachother too hard. The car felt great. We had some light rain which killed all the dust. I thought we were gonna have a great day. We get through our first lap and I already start to notice my oil pressure gauge running a little lower than normal. I know my motor is in need of a refresh so I just wanted to get through the 6 hours without blowing it up. Then I start to notice my brake pedal getting soft which usually means a unit bearing coming loose and pushing the caliper pistons in. We keep on taking it easy and about halfway through lap 2 I lose all the studs on the left rear.
At that point I realize the wheel was coming loose not the bearing. We’re 5 miles from pit and I need a new bearing. One of the course working got me back to pits to get parts n tools. I forgot one allen wrench which prevents me from swapping the axle shaft over but we were able to get a wheel back on it and 3wd it back to finish lap 2 and get to the pits. Now we’ve lost almost 2 hours and we’re absolutely soaked. I dont think I’ve ever stood in such heavy rain n worked on a broken car.
We could have kept it moving and probably still grabbed a top spot but with 3 calipers a hurting motor and a hurt pride I figured it was best to just call it before the day got any worse. I hate giving up at races and its even worse when a simple failure like that totally ruins my day. We had a good team and a fast car just couldn’t get it to the finish. Back to the shop. Should have some good go pro footage while it lasted.
