Tuesday Tips- Arrow Weight

Let’s continue last week’s tip with arrow weight. This is an argument that will never end but I am going to give my opinion and what I have seen work. I am not a fan of super heavy arrows. After 30 yards, your room for error drastically decreases. I like to see 6-8 grains per pound. 6-7 grains per pound for the people shooting shorter draw lengths. I personally believe you can be too heavy. Even shooting 31” draw at 70lbs, 8+ grains per pound is a heavy arrow and is going to drop significantly. At 6-7 grains per pound, I do not believe there is an animal in North America that it will not pass through with a sharp broadhead. Weight equals kinetic energy and kinetic energy on target is huge but there is a line where too heavy of an arrow is not worth the extra energy on target. Judging a deer at 38 yards and it’s at 40 yards, an arrow that is too heavy will result in a clean miss. Play around with arrow weights and shoot what is comfortable but do not shoot something because everyone else is.

Tuesday Tips- Arrow Selection part 1

Make sure you have the right arrows!!!!! Make sure you shooting the correct spine arrow along with the correct weight arrow. There are several spine charts to point you in the right direction but remember length of arrow and weight added up front changes the spine. The heavier the front end, the weaker the spine. Most times spine and weight will correlate with each other but there are some cases they don’t. Minimum grains per pound needs to be 5. I personally like to see 6-8 grains per pound for hunting around here. Total arrow weight is personal preference as long is it above 5 GPP. There are downfalls to being to light and to heavy of an arrow. We will touch on that next week!
This will be a multiple week tip.

Tuesday Tips- Relax and have fun!!!

Far too often I see archers get discouraged or disappointed while they are practicing or even after missing an animal. 90% of the time that can be traced back to being relaxed and not having fun! The whole reason anyone picks up a bow is for fun. Even the people who are paid to do this every day started off as doing this for fun. When you lose sight of that, it becomes a job. We get frustrated, angry, and disappointed. Make sure you are having fun. Pick new targets, pick new yardages, new shooting positions, gamble a little bit with friends and family. Keep it fun! If you are having fun, you are relaxed. I’ve been in the slumps while shooting or working on them but I always find a way out. This pic was at a 3-D shoot circa 2012!

I apologize about not having our Tuesday Tips last week as we had some private family matters to take care of but we are back!

Tuesday Tips- I had to make a few slides since I can only type out so much.

Check all your stands a couple times during the season. I normally take mine down at the end of the year but there are some I leave up. I will normally loosen those straps and let it sit so the tree doesn’t grow into it. Make sure you check all your straps for nicks or cuts. Check for rust on your stands and steps. Try not to leave your lifeline in the tree all year. At the end of the season, tie some paracord up so you can pull a lifeline up and around from the ground, that way you are safe going up.

A linesman belt isn’t going to stop you from hitting the ground but it will slow you down. Always keep tension on the it. Make sure someone knows where you are hunting and keep your cell phone somewhere you can get to it if you have an accident. If you fall in a harness, it is going to cut off access to your hip pockets. Make sure your harness has leg stirrups. They allow you to stand up in a fall situation to relieve the blood pressure in your legs. If you have been hanging there for a long time without relieving the pressure, it can kill you. Always set your life lines up so you fall into the tree and close to the ladder.
The video is a linesman belt being slack but finally catching before the ground.
Be safe.
No one wants that phone call

Tuesday Tips: Cover!!

Make sure you have plenty of it! Whitetail hunters get busted by skylining, wind, and movement.

Skyline- sticking out like a sore thumb. Make sure you have background cover and watch where the sun sets or rises. You don’t wanna be seen dancing in the shadows trying to draw back. Make sure you blend in like the CIA does with the Taliban.

Wind- We have already covered this one. Try to hang your stands or set your blinds on a dominant wind. Only hunt good winds.

Movement- The less cover you have, the less you can move. More cover equals more available movement. You wanna be able to move around like Hillary in a jail cell. Quietly, and never get caught.

Tuesday Tips: Shot Placement

Today we are gonna talk about shot placement. Shot placement is critical to a quick recovery of game. Me personally, I am taking the double lung shot over a heart shot. You can’t run far if you can’t breathe. Lungs, heart, liver, and gut shots are going to end up with a dead animal. Two of those areas will lead to a long day/night of tracking.

It isn’t advisable to take a shot with the animal quartering toward you especially from an elevated position. A slight pull right or left will cause you to miss the vitals. Quartering away is your best opportunity for a quick recovery. You may not get the same blood trail as a broadside double lung but if you aim at the opposite shoulder, you will have a dead animal. Shoot a sharp broadhead whether it be mechanical or fixed.

Remember to practice your shots. Bend at the waist. Follow the crease of the leg to the top, and watch your recovery rate sky rocket.

Tuesday Tips: Game Recovery

The most important thing us as bow hunters can do is recover our game. We spend tons of money on equipment but we don’t practice the same way we hunt. It is vital to make good clean shots on game. Double lung and heart shorts are guaranteed deaths but not recoveries.

Mark your arrow where you shot the animal. Watch and remember the last place you seen the animal. Listen for the animal. Carry some type of marking material. Toilet paper, reflective tape, surveyor tapes etc etc. Always mark your first sign of blood and slowly move forward marking it. When the blood dries up,look on the side of trees or where stuff is kicked up. Make sure you give the animal plenty of time to expire. If you are unsuccessful with your initial recovery, call for help. Hire a tracker with a dog. Hire someone with a thermal drone. Bring some friends out and walk a grid. It is our job to exhaust all resources when finding a wounded animal. Your best bet for an easy recovery is to shoot a sharp broadhead, practice different shots and angles, and take your time when you are shooting game. Pictured above is and his dog Boone along with our basset Magnolia with her boss Levi. Boone is listed on the United Blood Trackers with a UBT passed test.
