There’s nothing like a six-man football game at sunset in a Texas town with one Main Street.
You won’t wait in a long line to get in. There might not even be a fence around the field. If you show up with a camera, folks are usually just glad somebody came to cover their kids.
The student section might be the rest of the high school scattered across the bleachers, while the younger kids play their own game of football behind them.
The lady taking tickets has probably been doing it for 40 years, and she knows people from both towns by name.
The field isn’t fancy. It may have started as a cow pasture that somebody cared enough about to turn into a place for Friday nights.
Somewhere nearby, there’s probably a faded sign celebrating a state championship from the ’50s, ’60s, or ’70s. Stick around long enough and you might meet one of the old-timers who played on that team.
These kids know about squeeze chutes, cattle prices, and when to plant, because that’s the world they’ve grown up in. Then they pull on a jersey and play under a Texas sky like this one.
It’s a different world.
In a lot of cases, it feels like a trip back to the way the world used to be.
Truly, it feels like the way the world should be.
