Loosen the girth, bridle off, neck rope on!

For us, every ride ends with a "thank you" a kiss on the nose, cool down, reward snacks, some appreciative bonding time then grooming and after care.

🌹🐴 Lady J and Sir Mayday of Eques Equi Spiritus out for a relaxing evening stroll. 🐴🌹

What a quiet ride full of birdsong and a trusted, cheeky steed to share it with. Especially while the world is so energetic with and right now.

Some thoughts came up during this ride of how we get asked a lot of questions at events, but one comes up more than any other:

"Are the horses happy?"

Our answer is always the same:

Their welfare comes first.
Always.

If we believed one of our horses was unhappy, uncomfortable, in pain, overwhelmed, or simply not enjoying the job, they wouldn't be doing it.

Our horses are our partners, not our equipment.

We would never ask them to:
⚔️ Do a job they genuinely dislike.
🐴 Participate in an event they aren't mentally or physically prepared for.
⚔️ Work through pain, injury, fear, or exhaustion.
🐴 Enter an environment that exceeds their current level of training and confidence.

What many people don't see are the countless quiet days like this one. 🤗

The trail rides.
The groundwork.
The desensitization.
The conditioning.
The veterinary care.
The saddle fitting.

The hours spent listening to what each horse is telling us.

Some horses love crowds and attention, like Sir Mayday. Some prefer quieter jobs, like Sir Iron. Some need more time before they're ready for public events like The Red Dragon. That's okay. 🌹

Success for us isn't measured by how many events we attend.

Success is a horse that remains confident, willing, relaxed, and trusting of their rider.

At Eques Equi Spiritus, every horse is treated as an individual. We work with the horse in front of us, never as the horse "we wish they were".

Because at the end of the day, the greatest honor isn't riding a warhorse.

It's earning the trust of one... Sir Mayday carries me with utmost care and goodwill. 🌹🐴

Throughout 2026, our horses and riders will represent Eques Equi Spiritus at parades, festivals, Renaissance fairs, educational demonstrations, historical sites, community events, and family-friendly appearances throughout Ohio. 🏰

Sir Mayday (Buddy), Lady Rebekah, and The Iron Rose (Justine) put in a 3 mile walk along the historic Ohio & Erie Towpath ( Ohio to Erie Trail ) in the historic Canal Fulton, located south of Cuyahoga Valley National Park.

We got some great exposure miles in our new Trek Boots by Cavallo Hoof Boots, scoped out the layout, and prepped for what’s ahead as Eques Equi Spiritus and the DeathWatch Knights get ready for the Saturday morning, July 11 parade kicking off Olde Canal Days Festival and the USA 250 celebration.

The people we met along the way were kind, respectful, and completely enamored with dear Buddy which we always love to see people admire him as much as we do! 🥰🐴.

These quieter prep days are what build confident, steady horses for bigger public events, and Buddy was his normal steady & reliable warhorse self.

We’ll be riding in the parade and spending most of the afternoon at St. Helena Park afterwards for the festival, join us as lords and ladies of the realm, take photos beside your champion knights or astride your own warhorse, Sir Tater Trot!

Riders are welcome to join us under our banner in medieval garb, as long as your horse is parade proof and comfortable with crowds, noise, and commotion. ⚔️
