Parents of high school athlete who aspire to play at the next level, I hope that you notice the emphasis put on the human before the athlete. The challenge I see with this post is that as parents or even coaches of young athletes in middle school and high school, there isn't nearly enough emphasis on the person/human being and then when the athlete side of them has struggles or face the hardships that come with competing at a high level, they arent equipped to handle them fully.
We all have our part to play in this but as youth coaches and parents, we have to simply do more. Hire the mindset coach, get a sports psychologist, have the conversation, ask the questions...it literally saves lives and it can specifically save YOUR child's/athletes Life!
Tomorrow we kick off our fifth Student Athlete Mental Health Week with 209 colleges and universities (252 including clubs and high schools) participating!
