Additional info on bidirectional chargers from the CEO of Enphase

Since the Enphase earnings call didn't provide any ship dates for the bidirectional charger, I reached out by email to Badri Kothandaraman, the CEO of Enphase, to ask for further details. He responded! His email is below:

> Our plans have always been late 2025 on the DC Bidi charger product.
>
> The DC Bidi charger product has an inverter outside the car which interfaces between 1000v DC on the car side and regular AC on the home side. This is an all-GaN design in a 3.8 KW microinverter. The product would have 3 such microinverters for a 11-kW DC Bidi charger. The product has additional complex control and connectivity circuitry interfacing to the car and home.
>
> Warning: there may be further delays in schedule due to the standards in development (15118). And compliance is relatively complex here as we are trying to work with all cars compatible to the standard.
>
> Our second-generation uni-directional EV charger which is slated for Europe release in late 2024 ( this year) has been designed to be compatible to AC bi-di cars with a software release. Here the bi-di inverter is in the car and not present externally, hence AC. But that release still depends on the 15118-communication standard being robust and available ( it is not today). And you’ll see that mature more in 2025.
>
> This is an accurate status but note things are evolving and Enphase usually takes time to produce something that’s highest quality and reliability. I’ll be sure to give an update in our earnings call again regularly.

A few doors down from my cabin two neighbors had new generators installed by a company three counties away. They did not request a quote from SOL which has two times the five star quotes on Generac and Google. While driving past their homes I noticed several major installation errors since they were both visible from the street. The AHJ failed them on inspection. The young technician (not individually certified, licensed or supervised by his electrical company) got in an argument with the senior inspector of South county and pi**ed him off. When the system fails and it will, what kind of customer service will these neighbors get?

***Public Safety Warnings***
Generators create high voltage and use propane. Improper installation can be catastrophic.
SOL has the most generators installed in PML for a reason. We have a backlog into next year. We don't need to go to three counties to scrape up business. Observations are all mine first hand, Not hearsay. Check our recommendations on Generac & Google. I am not a wolf in sheep's clothing. I am the sheepdog watching the flock. Service with installation, Only.

The pastor says they sit front and center. The gay boys. Sometimes they hold hands. And some folks have said he should address the issue. But the pastor tells me he doesn’t know what to say.
There is the couple who are pregnant and not married. Walks in shame as her father a “Man of God”, physically slaps her legs while she is having morning sickness and the Boyfriend who is not wanting to marry her. But the pastor tells me he doesn’t know what to say.
And then there’s the man who sneaks in the back door. Fresh off the street. After the service starts. And leaves before altar call. The people sitting close complain about how bad he smells. Of beer and smoke and sweat. But the pastor tells me he doesn’t know what to say.
And then there’s the young mama who wears dirty clothes and lets her four children come in and eat all the donuts and drink all the watered-down juice. Some church staff say they “…eat like little pigs. Like they haven’t eaten in weeks.” While the Mama just stands there and lets them. And the elders say something must be done and said. But the pastor tells me he doesn’t know what to say.
And there’s the w***e sitting among the faithful. And everybody knows her. She sits with a painted-up face, cheap perfume, and a broken heart. And those who sit close, well, they all treat her for what they think she is. And at the last staff meeting, her name came up. Something must be done about her. But the pastor tells me he doesn’t know what to say.
The pastor is a good man. Holy and just. And he wants to do the “right and loving” thing. And he wants to “look like Jesus”. And he asks me if I have any thoughts on anything he could say.
Yes, sweet Pastor. I do. Start with this and say it Louder than any other words:
“Welcome to Church. This is a place of love and hope and safety and forgiveness. There will be food for the hungry. Living water for the thirsty. We are so glad you are here. You are invited. You are loved. Come on in—we’ve been waiting on you. Welcome here. We are the church.”
Say that. To the called and to the called-out. To the leaders and the greeters. To the dirty and the clean. We are all the same. We are.
May we blow the dust of religion out of our souls and choose affection instead. May our words and actions and reactions be a sanctuary for all.
Jesus broke many laws to love. So, Jesus, be our voice. Be the only words we should ever speak.I believe this with all my heart. Years ago we were kinder. Everybody looked out for one another. We need to go back to that. It takes us all. We gotta do better at looking out for each other instead of breaking each other down.
I'm going to make a bet, that out of my family and friends, less than 4 will take the time to put this on their wall.

PML Neighbors,
SOL sells generators with local warranty and service agreements in PML expanding to Tuolumne county. Generac dealers from Fresno, Salinas, Mariposa, Angels Camp & Stockton have been selling in PML. Only currently certified dealers are allowed to offer warranty service. So what is the difference between dealers? SOL has local service times and Generac service training with current certification. I have 10~15 minutes or less response times in PML and coverage in the county, too. I use all local people, licensed by the state of California.
Currently Generac is offering promotions on extended warranty. But who does the service? SOL offers an exclusive Service Agreement including limited lifetime (with a succession plan) for all our OEM.

NYC Vehicle-to-Grid PilotThree bidirectional Nissan Leaf electric vehicles (EV) – serving as mobile microgrids exporting...

NYC Vehicle-to-Grid Pilot
Three bidirectional Nissan Leaf electric vehicles (EV) – serving as mobile microgrids exporting energy to Consolidated Edison (ConEd) – demonstrated in a pilot project that it’s possible for EV drivers to earn income under New York’s innovative Value of Distributed Energy Resources (VDER) program, one of the project partners said.
In addition, the project found that it’s generally easier to site EVs in New York City than it is to site stationary storage for the VDER program.
The pilot is a partnership between clean energy project developer NineDot Energy, Fermata Energy, which provides hardware and software to send signals to the EVs, and the electric mobility company Revel. Another partner is the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), which developed a program to help identify the best times and locations to send energy from EVs to the grid.
More utilities and car manufacturers testing bidirectional EVs
Increasingly, bidirectional EVs are seen as key to aiding the energy transition by providing backup resources, income-generating opportunities and grid assets. Recently, Toyota and San Diego Gas & Electric announced a project to identify ideal experiences for residential vehicle-to-grid exports.
“Utilities and vehicle original equipment manufacturers across the U.S. and Europe are actively pursuing demonstration deployments to fine-tune their understanding of how the bidirectional charging technology works, what’s possible with the technology and what’s the best way to structure the regulatory solutions that will liberate the benefits of bidirectional charging,” said David Slutzky, founder and chairman of the board of Fermata Energy.
New York state’s VDER program is attractive to EV drivers and fleets because it offers a number of ways to reap income in the market. The program pays for five different services and, in some cases, DER and EV owners can “stack” or provide more than one grid service, which boosts revenues to DER and EV owners while supporting the grid.
Pilot yields 60 days of energy exports and income
The partners began the pilot – funded through the Wells Fargo Innovation Incubator, a clean tech program supported by Wells Fargo and NREL – partway through the summer of 2022. During the summer of 2023, the pilot yielded 60 days of energy exports from the EVs, said Joe Silver, product manager at NineDot Energy. The site host was Revel, which installed chargers in Brooklyn for the project.
“The project reiterated what we had proven: that vehicle-to-grid is eligible for credits in New York,” Silver said.
New York’s VDER program provides numerous revenue streams
The effort took advantage of three of five possible revenue streams under the VDER program, he said. The most lucrative was the demand reduction value. During about 60 summer days, ConEd compensated the project for exporting energy to the grid between 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. on nonholiday weekdays.
“It’s a fixed value contract for 10 years when you’re interconnected,” Silver said. Because it’s a fixed rate, it helps projects get financed, he added.
Another value stream was locational marginal-based pricing, which is the value of energy exports when and where they’re provided.
A third revenue stream under the VDER program is capacity value of the project, based on the statewide peak hour of the year.In order to receive that compensation, NineDot Energy used weather forecasts to help predict when the peak hour would occur, Silver said. ConEd doesn’t identify that peak hour, but it generally happens during the summer.
Working through the pilot project’s bugs
During the summer of 2022, NineDot grappled with a few challenges, Silver said. “We had to get the scheduling right. We had to understand the difference between the rated capacity of the EV battery and what’s actually usable.”
The Nissan Leafs had 62-kWh batteries and were charged with 15-kW chargers. “You’d think you’d get a four-hour discharge, but, in practice, the cars don’t like to discharge down to zero and the batteries aren’t always at 100%,” he said. They often lose some charge standing idle overnight.
Once the partners addressed those challenges, the project confirmed NineDot Energy’s expectations.
Easier to permit bidirectional EVs than stationary storage
“We found that three Nissan Leafs can provide three hours of exports using 15-kW Fermata bidirectional chargers,” said Silver. “You can install, interconnect and operate EV chargers in New York City and do it faster than large stationary batteries,” he added. It’s easier to permit EVs than stationary batteries because the EVs aren’t regulated by the fire department.
NineDot Energy will continue to test other bidirectional EVs at the New York City site as they become available, Silver said.
New York City is an ideal place to test the vehicles because the export revenues are higher in the city than in many other markets. ConEd has a high peak load in the summer that needs to be balanced with resources such as EVs and stationary storage. In addition, storage will be needed to help support the grid as electrification accelerates, increasing demand on the grid, said Silver.
NREL developing program that helps identify when to export to the grid
And NREL continues to work on an as-yet-unnamed program that estimates the impact of exporting EV battery power to the grid. The program focuses on how much power to inject into the grid – and when – to maximize revenues, said NREL senior power systems engineering researcher Manish Mohanpurkar.
For now, the prospects of using bidirectional EV fleets to support the New York City grid and earn income look promising.
“We’ve shown that you can safely install, interconnect and operate bidirectional EV chargers in a dense urban place and can monetize them using existing tariffs,” said Silver. “We’re excited to scale this up.”
