Thanks for the recognition WITN news!!

GREENVILLE, N.C. (WITN) -If you are driving around you may have seen some signs going up that say East Coast Greenway.

The greenway will stretch from Calais, Maine, and run all the way to Key West, Flordia.

The East Coast Greenway links routes for bicycle riders, hikers or runners to sections of greenways along the east coast for cyclists to use that have little to no vehicle traffic.

One of those greenways is the Tar River Greenway in Greenville.

Cyclist Steven Hardy-Braz says, “So the East Coast Greenway is a concept of connecting greenways from Maine to Flordia, so 3,000 miles of connected greenways. So think of a urban or paved version of the Appalachian Trail, people can run, stroll, hike or bike.”

Across North Carolina and Virginia, more than 400 signs have been put up.

Continuing on through Johnston County, my ride took me through Four Oaks. It was a small town but had its own busy bike shop All Out Bikes. It was a pleasant oasis full of some classic bikes, friendly owners, and creative creations up cycled from broken bicycle parts saved from the landfill. I understand that there have been discussions to covert some land into a greenway here. I sure hope it happens someday soon so I can return and enjoy visiting this town again.

I often joke about my touring bicycle being like a pack mule. Built here in the US (by Seattle based Rodriquez Bikes) the Ultimate Touring Bike is a gem that has transported me and my kitchen, tent/hammock, clothing, rain gear, supplies, food, water (and adult beverages), and other supplies across the country and through multiple long rides as well as shorter everyday shopping trips. Yet, when I got to beautiful Benson NC (home of NC’s Mule Days celebrations) I was treated to learning more about the real mules by one of the town leaders and family members who founded this celebration

It is great to see the support for hiking, biking, walking, and active healthy living by these communities who have even installed a simple bike repair stand along the way to support locals and visitors alike. Small towns like these are inspirational in their promotion for the quality of life for all.

Starting at the Clark Park Nature Center and running for five miles is the Cape Fear River Trail. Hundreds of species of plants, trees, and birds as well as waterfalls are enjoyed along this paved pathway. It is a refreshing haven from a couple of days of current road only route and fitting that the park’s trailhead is named for Moses Mathis known as Fayetteville’s ‘Bicycle Man’

Branching off of the trail are some Mt Bike Pathways as well for those who wish to ride on some more challenging natural terrain )

While not paved the Dunn-Erwin Rail Trail is a pleasant packed crushed gravel trail of five miles that connects these two downtowns.

Into Fayetteville, named for a war hero and a strong military town as it is home to the 82nd Airborne and has one of the strongest Army presence in any city of the U.S. Rich in history, culture, and has some beautiful areas as well.

How fitting to have an angel of hope along the pathway here inspiring us to all work towards always leaving the world better than we found it

The French general who did so much to assist this country’s fight for independence (along with the French Navy) is honored here along with the town’s name. This reminds me of how interconnected our worlds are and if we are to have hope for a better post pandemic world, we need to focus on what can connect and unite us more than remaining disconnected and divided in isolation.

Beautiful area which I had camped at once before on the Cycle North Carolina annual Mts to the Coast ride. I loved doing that ride and have ridden it 8 times so far and look forward to more as well as riding in more states. If you want to learn more history of any state and see, smell, feel, hear, and any other way sense the diversity of any state, a great way to do it is via the seat of a bicycle.

NCDOT state bike route #5 goes the same way that the ECG route is proposed to go but so does NC’s MST-Mountains to the Sea Trail. Beautiful places connecting people and places wether it is via hiking, biking, strolling, or rolling. These connections being made today will leave a legacy for others to enjoy of which I will be more pound to leave behind than some widened, deadly, polluting multilane divided highway for my children and future grandchildren. While those parts of the nation’s infrastructure are needed in places, what legacy do we wish to have, enjoy, and leave behind?

Not only did Dave and I get to stay with Stephane and Angela, Warm Shower hosts par excellence, we were able to meet their wonder cycling, roller skating daughter as well. More kismet, of course, Angela was from Farmville NC many years ago and attended the annual Petals and Pedals ride I hosted upon my return home. Warm Shower blessings occur again, a guest gets to host a former host 😉 Yet another example of how the ECG connects people and places.

Back in Wilmington, it is great to see that there are examples of cautionary and warning signs. I do to know the history of exactly who worked to ensure these were installed but as with this ride, we all stand on the shoulders of giants who have gone before us. Some pioneers blazed the pathways we get to enjoy today and staff of the ECGA are working hard to connect the fragments of the ECG into a unified greenway of over 3,000 miles. I am thrilled to play a small part in leaving that legacy of this trail for future generations to enjoy by my membership, advocacy, and this ride. Thanks to the Wilminton leadership, bike ped commission, NCDOT, MPO, Cape Fear cyclists etc who have worked and continue to work for safer roads, paths, and greenways in this area.

A $2 fee for cyclists to use the ferry here…seriously. Guess what bill I used to pay for my ride on the ferry boat? Thanks NCDOT for the beautiful life across the water

Look carefully at the ferry boats and you may see that each one has a different university name and logo painted on its side. This one is for Durham based Duke-yet another connection to the ECG whose HQ is in Durham and where this whole trip started and will end. Bike karma and kismet strike again on the ECG
