⚠️ John Farnam challenges the phrase “safe gun handling.”

His point isn’t that careful fi***rm handling doesn’t matter. It’s the opposite.

John argues that fi****ms are inherently dangerous tools, and telling students that following one procedure guarantees nothing bad will ever happen creates a false sense of certainty.

Instead, he emphasizes:

🔹 Follow procedures designed to reduce risk
🔹 Never assume a mechanical system is risk-free
🔹 Treat responsibility as an ongoing practice, not a guarantee

How much time should defensive shooters really spend practicing reloads? 🤔

Wayne Dobbs recalls advice Chuck Taylor gave him back in the early 1980s:

If your pistol has run completely empty during a defensive encounter, it may tell you something important about everything that happened before the reload.

Wayne isn’t saying reloads don’t matter.

They do.

But he challenges shooters to think about priorities:

• Were the previous shots effective?
• Are we practicing reloads because they solve a likely problem?
• Or because fast reloads look impressive on the range?
• Are we training a complete shooting process—or one isolated skill?

It’s a great example of Wayne’s larger philosophy: put training time where it provides the most meaningful return.

🎒 Does responsible carry have to look the same for everyone?

Not every student can comfortably or practically carry with a traditional waistband holster. Physical limitations, medical considerations, clothing, lifestyle, and other individual circumstances can all affect what works.

Vicki discusses what she calls “flexi carry” — recognizing that:

🔹 Different people have different physical needs
🔹 Handbag carry can be a legitimate option
🔹 Some students may have very limited carry choices
🔹 Instructors should work with the person standing in front of them instead of forcing everyone into one solution

Good instruction starts by understanding the student’s real life.
