The Kindness of Strangers ✨

Anna here with a sweet story I’d like to share💛

Over the past few days, we had a crew of contractors working on our home. Before they arrived, we had never met them.

At one point, I noticed they were using a gardening bench that was identical to one I had given my father several years ago. My dad loved that bench. Every summer, he would use it while tending to his garden.

Seeing it brought back memories, so I shared the story with the crew and told them how it felt like a little hello from my dad.

Yesterday was their last day.

This morning, I went downstairs to look at the finished project and noticed something unexpected.

They had left the bench behind.

Along with a heartfelt note.

I was completely taken by surprise.

In yoga, we often talk about connection and recognizing ourselves in one another. We speak about kindness, compassion, and the understanding that we are far more connected than we sometimes realize.

Yet these lessons don’t only happen on a yoga mat.

In fact, I’m willing to bet these men have never attended a yoga class.

And still, they embodied the practice beautifully.

At a time when it can feel like division, conflict, and negativity dominate the headlines, this simple act reminded me of something important:

There is still so much goodness in the world.

There are still people who listen.

People who care.

People who take the time to make a stranger feel seen.

Yoga teaches us that small actions matter. A kind word. A thoughtful gesture. A moment of genuine connection.

These are the things that ripple outward in ways we may never fully understand.

Today, I’m grateful for a gardening bench, a handwritten note, a hello from my dad, and a reminder that the practice of yoga isn’t confined to a studio.

Sometimes it shows up wearing work boots.

🤍

Have you experienced an unexpected act of kindness from a stranger? We’d love to hear your story.

✨This Week’s Reflection with Sally ✨

Keeping the Heart Open

Yoga has taught me that an open heart does not mean an unguarded one.

There can be a misconception that compassion means endless availability, endless forgiveness, or unlimited access to our time and energy. But the yogic principle of Ahimsa—non-harming—extends inward, too.

Ahimsa is not only about how we treat others. It is also about how we care for ourselves.

Sometimes non-harming looks like softness.
Sometimes it looks like stepping back.
Sometimes it sounds like saying “no.”

In yoga, we often teach that heart-opening postures require a strong foundation. The openness of the chest is supported by strength and stability underneath. Without that support, we collapse instead of expand.

I think the same is true in life.

Boundaries are not walls. They are an act of devotion. A way of protecting what is sacred within us so that we can continue to show up with authenticity, presence, and compassion.

You can remain open-hearted and still be discerning about what you allow into your space.

You can lead with love and still refuse harm.

Perhaps the practice is learning how to keep the heart open without abandoning ourselves in the process.

💭 What is one boundary that has helped you care for yourself more compassionately?

With love,
Sally 🤍

You Golf. You Lift. You Dominate. We Help You Move Better.

Most people think yoga is just stretching.

It’s not.

A well-rounded yoga practice builds strength, mobility, balance, coordination, and body awareness. It helps you move more efficiently, generate power more effectively, and stay active in the activities you love.

⛳ Golfers benefit from improved rotation, stability, and mobility through the hips, spine, and shoulders.

🏋️ Lifters develop strength in often-overlooked areas, improve joint mobility, and create better balance throughout the body.

🏓 Pickleball players gain agility, balance, coordination, and the freedom to move with greater ease on the court.

Many athletes spend their time repeating the same movement patterns. Yoga complements those activities by strengthening what is weak, lengthening what is tight, and creating the mobility needed to move well for years to come.

You don’t need to be flexible. You don’t need experience. You just need to show up.

One of the things we admire most about our teachers is that despite years of study, practice, and teaching, they never stop being students themselves.

After attending Gabriel Halpern’s recent workshop, The Biology of Hope: Supporting the Lungs and the Heart, Sarah Lill shared a reflection that stayed with her:

“While I left with new ideas for supporting the lungs, heart, and nervous system through restorative yoga, one lesson stayed with me long after the workshop ended: Fail joyfully.”

Learning requires mistakes.
Growth requires trying.
And sometimes we take ourselves far too seriously.

What if we approached life with a little more curiosity and a little less pressure?

Yoga reminds us that we don’t need to be perfect. We simply need to be willing to show up, stay open, and continue learning.

❤️ Thank you, Sarah, for sharing this beautiful reminder.

What would you try if you weren’t so worried about failing?

You can join Sarah on Monday evenings at The Yoga Effect for Restore and Breathe at 7pm

✨ Sometimes the greatest transformations happen in ways we never expect.

When people begin Yoga Teacher Training, they often come hoping to learn more about yoga, deepen their practice, or become a stronger version of themselves.

What unfolds is often something much deeper.

One of our recent graduates shared:

“Looking back, little did I know that it’s not just about becoming a better version of myself but rather accepting the parts of me that I have kept in the dark. Being patient and compassionate and allowing subtle changes to happen naturally.”

This is the heart of yoga.

Not striving to become someone else.
Not fixing what is broken.
But learning to meet ourselves with honesty, compassion, and acceptance.

We are so grateful to witness these journeys and to be part of a community where growth is supported, friendships are formed, and people discover strengths they never knew they had.

Thank you, Nosheen, for sharing your experience and for allowing us to be part of your path. ❤️

This Week’s Reflection with Sally

Yoga teaches us that asking for help is not weakness; it is self-awareness in action.

It is recognizing when we have reached the edge of what we can carry alone. It is surrendering the need to control every outcome and allowing ourselves to receive support.

In the Bhagavad Gita, Arjuna finds himself overwhelmed on the battlefield. Filled with doubt and uncertainty, he does not pretend to have all the answers. Instead, he turns to Krishna for guidance.

What unfolds is one of yoga’s most profound teachings: true strength is not found in control, ego, or isolation. It is found in trust, surrender, devotion, and self-understanding.

Arjuna’s power does not emerge when he hardens himself. It emerges when he becomes willing to listen, learn, and receive support.

Many of us were taught that strength means independence. That we should be able to handle everything on our own. But yoga offers a different perspective. It reminds us that strength can also look like softening. It can look like vulnerability. It can look like reaching out when we need help.

On the path of yoga, healing and growth are deeply interconnected. Both require honesty. Both require courage. And both are often supported by the wisdom, kindness, and presence of others.

What if asking for help wasn’t something to be ashamed of?

What if it was part of the practice?

🤍 Reflection: What is one area of your life where you might benefit from allowing yourself to receive a little more support?

Love,
Sally

There comes a point in life when we begin to ask different questions.

Who am I becoming?
What matters most now?
How do I move through change with grace rather than resistance?

Over the past few years, Sally has found herself navigating many of the transitions that come with midlife—shifting priorities, changing relationships, a changing body, questions about purpose, and a growing desire to live more authentically.

Through her yoga practice and personal journey, she discovered the importance of creating space to pause, listen inward, and reconnect with what truly matters.

That journey inspired The Threshold: Reclaiming Power in Midlife.

Join us for an afternoon of gentle movement, breathwork, reflection, journaling, and meditation designed to help you reconnect with your inner wisdom and embrace this season of life with greater strength, clarity, and compassion.

✨ No yoga experience necessary—just come as you are.
