David Gumucio (aka “Gumby”)—The Voice of the Cowboys
For generations of Cowboys there was a voice that meant game day. From the football press box to the track, his voice did more than announce games or meets. He created atmosphere. He brought energy to the stands, pride to the field, and excitement to every Cowboy who competed.
David’s voice may be what people remember first, but his actions gave that voice meaning. As Community Council President and a Special Projects Volunteer, Gumby always looked for ways to make Grantsville High better. Terry Linares, former GHS Principal, said of David: “He never asked, ‘Why not?’ He asked, ‘How can we get this done, and the sooner the better!’” When the main basketball gym needed a scoreboard his voice called corporations for sponsors. When he felt too much was being spent on specific items his voice negotiated new sources. When he saw need in other areas of the school his voice rallied parents to those causes.
That was Gumby. He inspired all to make a difference for others just as he always did.
As Cowboy Club President and Athletic Fundraiser Chair, he found innovative ways to raise money and create opportunities. he gathered weekly prizes for home game prizes and instigated the “Best Seats in the House.” He gave sponsors great reasons to share with the school like coining “It’s another Soelbergs first down!”
As Press Box Supervisor and Voice of the Cowboys, he made every football game and track meet feel like an event. As Concession Coordinator and Football Equipment Coach, he was there behind the scenes doing whatever needed to be done. Kevin Butler, former GHS Football Coach, called him “A hard worker, eager to help in any way, and with unmatched love for GHS.”
He supported sports, clubs, dramatics, and musical programs. He envisioned better facilities and worked to make them happen. He served as a PTO member and was incredibly proud of his four boys as they participated and graduated from GHS.
He didn’t just talk about supporting our Cowboys. He showed up. Tooele County School District honored David as Community Volunteer of the Year for his years of unselfish service.
Former Coach Tony Cloward said, “I cannot think of anyone more deserving of this honor. His unmistakable voice, enthusiasm, and love for Grantsville helped create the ongoing spirit and tradition of Cowboy football.”
Gumby made people feel like they belonged, and he left a lasting impression on this entire community.
And that is why his voice still matters. His microphone may be silent now, but his voice remains—in the traditions, the memories, and the Cowboys he helped build. Let’s keep adding our voices to this community he loved like no other.
