This week ended his little league season and he asked me to take a picture of him with his favorite sign on the field because he thinks the line about college scholarships is hilarious.
He sees how nuts parents are.
But what I really want to do is re-create it and hang it at every cheer gym.
If you’re new here, I’m not just a boy cheer mom, I also spend the season as a vendor at comps up and down the east coast selling cheer swag, and whewwwww could this sign come in handy.
Whether at home or away, every season I watch too many adults ruin sports for kids. Especially cheer. And these Facebook groups that I know were created back in the day to simply connect people in the cheer world are often anything but, and have become little corners of the internet where toxicity thrives, where keyboard warriors assume battle positions, where it’s no longer about finding common ground and community.
And it spills over into real life, at our gyms around the country. We as parents have the ability to not make it feel that way, but for some reason it’s easier to hide behind screens instead of addressing bad behavior in person.
Will some of our kids follow this path into college? Sure will. And will some of them get scholarships to do so? Yep. But that number is MUCH smaller. In fact the majority of kids in cheer won’t do this in college, nor will they get a scholarship.
So parents: what’s YOUR endgame here? Because I promise you that your 6 year old that you’ve already gym hopped twice for because you’ll only allow your kid to be a flyer isn’t going to be the same kid - or athlete- when they are 18. Is it about YOU or is it about your kid?
Yes it’s expensive. Yes it’s time consuming. But it’s also fleeting.
For most of our kids, cheer will have an expiration date.
At almost 10 years old he tells me he has big dreams. Maybe one day they will be reality, but this is HIS story, not mine. And if college scholarships are in his future because of cheer it will happen because of the choices HE makes along his journey. Not because I decided it was MY endgame.
Read the damn sign.
