You have a lot of opportunities to race in 2021! If Ironman or Ironman 70.3 is calling you take a look! RACING IS BACK!

Race season in North America is officially in full swing!   We know everyone is excited to get back to racing, and the 2021 season sold out fast.  That is why we are excited to announce as restrictions have become more relaxed, we are able to open a limited number of spots for some of our most po...

This article is a timely "read" with the recent cancellation of Ironman Texas and with all the uncertainty of Ironman Canada, in particular, for a number of our athletes. Matt Dixon talks about consistency being the key to our long term success and I think he does a good job of giving us tools to manage the stress a pandemic brings to our training and racing lives. I'd love your thoughts.

This week -- within the midst of the continued uncertainty around racing -- it feels right to address training within this environment, with a special emphasis on consistency. We all began 2021 w...

Hey Team! Sharon and I are very excited to announce our recent partnership with a company called INSCYD Endurance and Sports Performance. We have made the initial purchase agreement and will start training next week.

The link is a quick look at what it can do for you, the athlete. The initial test is done at home using a power meter. The athlete completes 4 time trials on their bike ranging from 20 seconds to 12 minutes. From there we can analyze the data, give you details about your substrate utilization allowing you to dial in your nutrition to a "T". We also can identify your areas of strength and weakness to more specifically build your training plans to your specific needs. You will receive a video post test with the details too so it's a very neat tidy informative package.

Sharon and I are excited! We'll be in touch with more details as we get them. Please share any questions of thoughts you have and we will do our best to answer. Angie

I've been quiet for a while but found 2 really good articles by Alex Hutchinson today. The one I just posted and this one on cramping. The jury is still out, but this is well worth the time to read if you are a cramper, or know a cramper:)

A new study suggests that strength training is more important than electrolytes for preventing cramps

Merry Christmas Everyone! My athletes know that I almost always give run workouts by time versus distance. My reason is this way I know you have 2 hours of running "time" on your feet if that's what is prescribed. If I say 14k of running, and you go to trails, or have a very tired day, it might take you 2:15, or vise versa, you are very fresh, feel good, and knock it out a lot faster, the training load changes. Thus I use time. I also use time on the bike for the most part.

I always say "your body knows time, not distance". I believe this to be true.

This article talks about the downfall of mileage being your number one training metric to focus on. I really hope you take a minute to read it, and of course, share your thoughts.

It’s the one training metric virtually all runners track, but running scientists think we can do better

I very much respect Joe Friel and have had the pleasure of meeting him and being trained by him! This article makes so much sense to me and it supports my focus for several of my athletes. I will say that headed into winter months for Canadian athletes there are challenges to doing a lot of easy miles on the bike. The trainer is such a productive tool for quality riding. That means though that most runs should be aerobic, and in the spring, when you can get outside you are patient and take the time to put in the miles it's tough to do in the winter. This is called "reverse periodization" although it's not really reverse if you're training for an Ironman! You need long workouts as you approach race day!

I'm getting off topic here:) The point is, easy workouts are incredibly important and now more than ever they should be the focus for the bulk of our training.

I'd love your thoughts:)

For the past few months I’ve been talking with cycling and triathlon clubs in the US and UK via Zoom about training during the pandemic. With what appears to be another surge starting I’ve tried to help these athletes not only cope but also, hopefully, take advantage of this strange time to prep...

At our Phoenix Tri Camp in February, back when the world was normal, we had a brilliant nutrition lecture from Kelly Anne Ergman. She talked about caffeine gum and a few of us went and bought it at Target! With no races I haven't been able to give it a go but here is an article supporting the idea. I thought I'd share.

Caffeine can enhance performance but what is the best way to deliver the caffeine? here we look at the benefits of caffeinated chewing gum.

This is an excellent article highlighting the importance of "metabolic flexibility". It takes a few minutes to read but is insightful and research based. If you are playing with your carb/ fat balance please take the time to look.

The race director for Ironman Canada in Penticton just posted this on the IMC page. It's some info we've all been waiting for so I thought I'd share.

Hey friends,
Update for you. We are TENTATIVELY planning on opening registration to our priority groups (see below) on Monday the 21st of Sept...like in 1 week from this post. The following Monday, the 28th of Sept, we will open general registration.

Why "Tentative".....well....have you seen what 2020 has done to your best laid plans?...yeah, same here. So everything is tentative until its not. Thank you for understanding 🙂
Who is in our priority groups and how do you get in that listing? Allow me to share.

1) AWA athletes (means you need to be fast-ish)- if you are one you already know. If you are not one....you are not, and you cant become one this week

2) Tri-Club member - You need to be a member of an affiliated Tri-Club with IRONMAN - https://www.ironman.com/triclubs - once you find your club you need to designate your affiliation. Your club does not send us a list and we compile....YOU need to affiliate with the club. Don't miss that step. We pull that list middle of this week, so don't wait. do it now.

3) Previous year athletes at volunteers - So in this case 2019 IRONMAN Canada in Whistler and 2019 Whistler Volunteers. We also will be including 2019 IRONMAN 70.3 Canada athletes as this was a same day event in 2019

Now, you will be asking "what happens if we sell out during priority?" and that's a reasonable question. I cannot promise anything. This event originally (pre-Covid) sold out in hours.

Sooooo.....you need to be ready to click REGISTER on Sep 28th. Best bet is to join a club and get that done ASAP. Other than....well this should tell you all you need to know about Penticton. LEGENDARY. DONT WANT TO MISS IT. Its hard to get in because its amazing.
Ok, more updates coming along the way.

Oh, One last reminder - Just because we are opening registration and you have not received your deferral link and info yet, does not mean we missed you. Give us until end of Sept to process those. Your spot is secure, we are just processing them (see previous post from Sept 13th below on that)

That's it for me. Or at least that's it for what I suspect you care about right now.

We miss zip ties as much as you miss swim caps and timing straps. We CANNOT wait to get back to racing! See you in the Okanagan on August 29th! You will find me at the Barking Parrot most nights...just sayin
