15 years ago, I started planting food plots with my Dad. Just as anyone else who is passionate about hunting often does, we started small. Through time, my methods progressed and the results continued to improve. However, I always felt as though the results could’ve been even better or that we could offer the herd something more beneficial.
I set out to create something better. I wanted a blend of seeds that provided a high quality, nutrient dense, palatable forage from the time the seeds germinated until well after spring green-up. I also wanted to focus on improving soil health by creating a blend of seeds that all worked together. Little did I know this would become a down right obsession and soon consume my every thought.
Through years of trial and error, experimenting with different seed types, planting dates and methods, I believe I have come up with a series of seed blends that exceeded my expectations. During these years of testing, I have closely monitored patterns in what the deer seemed to prefer at different times of the year and have continued to alter the blends accordingly. While developing these seed blends, I began to explore building habitat structures and carving out brand new food plots. I began to see what seeds excelled in certain soil types and conditions. As a result, I have developed a system/strategy that helps put mature bucks in bow-range during daylight hours. These strategies simply help deer to do what they want to do and allow you as a hunter to capitalize on that.
I believe that the success I have had combining and implementing these strategies and seed blends together is testimony in itself. Especially while hunting in some of the most highly pressured whitetail states.
