I was care partnering for a person living with dementia in their home. They were tired and went to their recliner for a nap. I noticed they were struggling to settle—something we have all experienced in our lives, right? Fidgeting, scratching, rubbing, restless legs and arms, irregular breathing, vocalizations...

I slowly connected using Teepa Snow's Positive Physical Approach® and Hand-under-Hand® techniques, then began providing slow, steady pulses of pressure from my palm into theirs.

Within minutes, their breathing regulated, their body softened, and they peacefully fell asleep. I went and grabbed a thick throw blanket and folded it into a small rectangle and placed it across the front of their pelvis.

Why did it help?

✅ Pressure in the palm is calming
✅ Holding hands gives the sense of safety and support
✅ Weight across the pelvis gives a sense of grounding and security

How often do we pause and ask someone about the reasoning behind their approach or action before assuming it should be done differently or jumping in to make little adjustments?

Curiosity is one of the most valuable qualities we can bring to any relationship.

You might say:

“What are you noticing that influenced your decision to…”

“Tell me more about what you are seeing in this situation.”

“I am curious about (…). Please share your thoughts with me so I can better understand.”

Curiosity creates understanding and helps us work together to provide better support. More often than not, we learn together when we take the time to ask.

Today, I had the honor of leading a conversation about Why Skill Matters in Dementia Care at the monthly Williamson County Health Resource Meeting (WCHR).

Everyone had the opportunity to learn and practice a few Positive Approach to Care (PAC) techniques developed by Teepa Snow, proving that every interaction is an opportunity to connect and see what’s still possible.

Thank you to Park Place Health Care Center in Georgetown, Texas for hosting this event.

I appreciate everyone’s engagement today and willingness to try something new and different.

We all have the ability to make a difference!
