Murder in Galena: The Shooting of Jim Potts

Murder in Galena: The Shooting of Jim Potts The Suspicious Shooting of Jim Potts Based on real events. This page is not officially endorsed by any member of the Potts family.

I am simply interested in the truth. All evidence leads to foul play in regards to Jim's death. As far as the research I have gathered, much of it is still being authenticated.- Joseph Johnson

Jim Potts was a 51-year-old private investigator from Wyandotte, Okla. He had been investigating accusations of alleged police brutality in Galena, Kansas. Jim's body was found along the southbound lane of

Highway 26 outside Galena, Kansas on the morning of Aug. 26, 2003, lying beside his car, the engine running and the headlights on. A police report indicated that there was a driver's license near his left hand and a .38-caliber handgun near his right foot. Nothing that appears on this page is specifically, at this time, intended to accuse any certain individual of a crime. Much of the known evidence, and much that is left to come out, may lead some to believe that there was a "cover up." If indeed there was such, it was pulled off in an equally shoddy manner as the original, and subsequent law enforcement investigations into Jim's death.- Joseph Johnson

What was Jim doing in Galena, Kansas a half an hour before sunrise, and 30 miles away from home, on that warm August morning in 2003?

To put it simply, Jim was investigating citizen complaints of abuse from officers in the Galena Police Department, including Cameron Arthur, who was chief at the time. We will get into more of that in a future post.

There had been some serious allegations made regarding police misconduct, and Jim expressed some personal concerns to Joplin, Missouri attorney Roger Johnson, as well as his wife Carolyn.

In an email to Johnson just a few weeks prior to his death, Jim told the attorney about his looking into the police department, adding, “I just wanted to let you know about this in case I disappear, ha!” Johnson has since stated that he did not believe that Jim was in any danger at the time.

Following his death, Jim’s widow Carolyn spoke of a conversation she had with her husband about a month before he was shot.

She stated that Jim told her, “If anything happens to me, I want you to look at the Galena Police Department.” She said that he also added, “Carolyn, listen to me. I’m serious. If you delve into it, if you ask too many questions, you’re next.”

Yet, Jim’s death was a “su*cide.” Accountability may never come. But the truth will start to emerge, sooner or later.

This page is getting fired back up! Over the next several weeks, while partnering with Polymathēs Investigative Consultants and SluethDude, we will be taking a deeper dive into Jim's case. We will be looking at Jim's death, as well as the death of Michael Fry.

Both of these men died under suspicious circumstance. Both in Galena, Kansas. Why? Is it because they were about to expose corruption in the Galena Police Department?

We'll provide the details. Hopefully some of you can fill in some of the blanks, and together, we might bring justice to both of these men.
