THE HEART OF YOGA: LIVING THE 8 LIMBS
Month 1 — Yama
Week 1 — Ahimsa (Non-Harming)
Yoga is more than movement.
The ancient yogic path teaches us how to relate to ourselves, our communities, and the world around us with greater awareness and compassion.
This month Yoga Sankofa begins exploring the first limb of yoga: Yama — the ethical foundations of practice.
Our first principle is Ahimsa, often translated as non-harming.
Ahimsa reminds us that harm is not always physical.
Sometimes it looks like:
* speaking cruelly to ourselves,
* ignoring our body’s pain,
* pushing through exhaustion,
* reacting without breathing,
* or forgetting our shared humanity.
This week’s practice is simple:
✨ Speak to yourself gently.
✨ Take one deep breath before reacting.
✨ Modify without guilt.
✨ Rest when needed.
✨ Offer compassion where possible — including to yourself.
Journal Prompt:
Where am I being too hard on myself?
Yoga is not perfection.
Yoga is relationship.
Yoga is returning.
With love,
