This advice isn’t just for kids going to college. Self control is one of the most important and at times difficult things to learn to control. In the heat of the game emotions and anxiety can be out of control. If a player can learn to harness this and let it drive your level of play she can be unstoppable. If it is left unharnessed she will never reach her full potential. People are always watching behaviors and body language. Remember that.

I think we’ve gotten a little too scared of pushing our kids.

Not screaming at them.
Not living through them.

Pushing them.

Because there’s a difference.

Sometimes your kid needs a hug.

Sometimes they need you to look them dead in the eye and say, “That’s not your best.”

The problem is we’ve become so worried about hurting their confidence that we’re lowering the standard.

Confidence isn’t built from being told you’re amazing all the time.

Confidence comes from doing hard 💩 over and over again and realizing you’re capable of more than you thought.

My parents loved me enough to not let me coast.

When I wanted to quit, they challenged me.
When I got comfortable, they pushed me.
When I made excuses, they called me on it.

And thank God they did.

Because excuses are a temporary fix.

Work ethic stays with you forever.

Nobody gets to the top because they had the best excuses.

They get there because somewhere along the way somebody taught them how to keep going when they didn’t feel like it.

As parents, that’s the balance.

Love them enough to support them.

But love them enough to challenge them too.
